Barolo 2016: A Vintage of Balance
Our Head of International Buying, Jesper Kjaersgaard, shares his thoughts and excitement around Barolo 2016. The king of Italian wine, Barolo hails from Piedmont and Jesper was on the ground in the region to find, try and buy these regal wines from an exceptional vintage. We have been very lucky with the calibre of vintages coming our way from the world’s greatest wine regions. We recently shouted from the rooftops about the wonderful 2015 vintage of Brunello di Montalcino. It’s my pleasure to share with you the 2016 vintage from Barolo and why you should fill your cellar with these wines. It is one of the best vintages that I have seen from the region in my 25 years in the wine industry, and it ranks up there with 2008 and 2010.
On my trip to the region in November 2018, whilst trying the voluptuous 2015s from bottle, most wineries finished our conversation with ‘wait ‘til you see the 2016s!’ With this in mind as I drove into Barolo in November 2019, I started my tastings at some of the region's finest producers with great excitement. Some of them include Langton's exclusives and new discoveries that we will bring to you over the coming months. And others, more established producers that we will source from other Australian importers with whom we work closely.
As I tasted my way through the 2016 vintage wines, the reason for all the excitement became clear. The 2016 vintage in Barolo is a classic and has produced the most balanced wines I've seen as a whole. There is no pointy acidity, rough unripe tannins or alcohol sticking out–all characteristic of lesser vintages and some lesser wines. The 2016s are very perfumed and extremely approachable now, but with great structure telling us they will last a lifetime. If I were you, I would stock up on these wines. Not only the top Crus, but all the ranges and price points. 2016 is a vintage that will offer great bargains at the lower price points.
The first release that I would like to offer are the magical wines of Elio Grasso. At Langton’s, we have been great supporters of these wines for a long time and they are proving to be early contenders for Wines of the Vintage.
We’ve also had great success with the wines from Sordo and, looking at the 2016s, it’s fair to say that these look even better than the 2015s. We are hoping to be able to invite you to a tasting of these wines this year.
You will also find offers of perennial favourites such as Michele Chiarlo, Luigi Pira, Massolino, Chiara Boschis (coming soon), and some great producers we’ll share with you in due course. Stay on top of all thing Barolo and register your interest.
I look forward to taking you on this journey of 2016 Barolo and show you why I love these wines. Explore our Piedmont portfolio of Barolo, Barbaresco, Langhe Nebbiolo and more.
