Cantata Pinot Noir, Central Otago 2017
Two years. That’s how long it took Misha and Andy Wilkinson to find their little slice of paradise. Having both escaped high-flying corporate careers in Asia, they landed in New Zealand with a singular goal: to work alongside one another on a project that they were both passionate about. The answer was simple—wine. But the reality of such a dream isn’t easy. Their first task? Finding the best site possible for what would become Misha’s Vineyard.
Picture this. 57 hectares of pristine Central Otago wilderness. Three rolling terraces of grapevines, soaked in golden sun, cascading to the glacial waters of Lake Dunstan. The site that captured the imagination of Misha and Andy, however, isn’t just a postcard-perfect landscape—it grows exceedingly good grapes. The vineyard’s north-westerly orientation is a sun trap, creating a microclimate sitting a few degrees above the Central Otago standard. The majestic slopes encourage drainage, and limit frost in the oft chilly region. Misha and Andy had found their vineyard. Now, they needed a vigneron.
Lovers of New Zealand wine will likely know the name Oliver Masters. Masters’ pedigree in crafting serious, age-worthy Pinot Noir is undisputed. He spent years at the helm of iconic estate Ata Rangi, putting the Martinborough winery assertively on the map. The Wilkinsons were eager to lure the esteemed winemaker to Misha’s Vineyard. The then just-planted vines proved a challenge Masters would eagerly rise to.
It all began with Pinot Noir. Hauntingly evocative and Central Otago’s most celebrated varietal. These days, Misha’s Vineyard has four tiers of the good stuff under their belt, it’s beauty and distinction assured under the deft hand of Masters. There’s the classic intensity of Verismo. The red fruit-driven complexity of The High Note. The elegant and accessible Cantata, seductive with silky tannins and a whisper of sweet plum.
Dress Circle Pinot Gris, Central Otago 2018
While Pinot may have sparked the passion for Central Otago that birthed Misha’s Vineyard, the label’s whites are leading a charge of their own. Dress Circle Pinot Gris is an elegant and versatile white, with attractive pure fruit characters and a mineral backbone. Both Lyric and Limelight Rieslings have garnered 95+ point scores. The esoteric herbaceous notes of The Cadenza Gewürztraminer prompted Bob Campbell MW to deem it a “seriously good sticky.”
The unwavering commitment of Misha and Andy Wilkinson to making the best product possible is evident in both the history of Misha’s Vineyard and, more importantly, the wines themselves. Langton’s are proud to be the exclusive distributors of these wines in Australia.
