Langton’s Head of International Buying Jesper Kjaersgaard writes about the latest addition to Langton’s imported portfolio: Domaine Rion – an Australian exclusive. Shop the wines here.
It was in the early 2000’s that Patrice Rion, the then head winemaker at his family's domaine, Daniel Rion et fils, decided to sell his share to his brother and set up his own domaine.
Starting with a mere two hectares of vines, the Domaine has slowly grown to the six hectares they currently own. They are also joined by their son, Maxime.
Their domaine is located in the small commune of Premeaux (the most southern part of the greater Nuits St Georges). It has gained a reputation for producing lighter and more perfumed wines than Nuits St Georges’ more traditionally structured and robust wines.
The wine line-up is impressive and features some of the most coveted wines in the appellation, such as Terres Blanches, Clos des Argillieres and the magnificent Monopole, Clos St-Marc (formerly produced by Bouchard Pere et Fils).
In 2005, Michele and Patrice were joined by their son Maxime, who gained much experience at Langton’s favourites such as Chateau Angelus in Saint Emilion and Dry River in New Zealand.

‘ ...Patrice and Maxime are standouts in their field... ’
We have covered the heat that is so prolific in the 2018 vintage in other campaigns and during our Taste With Langton’s Burgundy event, and though 2018 is a ripe vintage, the Rion’s have dealt with it in an exceptional way.
Starting with extensive sorting in the vineyard, the grapes went through a very soft extraction to ensure the thick skins didn’t extract too much harsh tannin. The wines are pure and fresh with a lovely expression of terroir and one of the most precise collections of wines I’ve seen from any domaine in 2018. It is often in vintages like these that I find the true calling card of a winemaker shows, and as the 2018s show - Patrice and Maxime are standouts in their field.
These wines are a must–have addition to any Burgundy cellar. Langton’s are thrilled to have added a domaine of this calibre to our stable of exclusive imports. Shop the Domaine Rion range now.
