Purple Hands Planta Circa Cabernet

Ned Goodwin MW writes for Langton’s about the project at Purple Hands making contemporary wines from some of the oldest vines in Australia, if not the world. Explore our portfolio of Purple Hands wines.

Purple Hands was founded in 2006 by wine lover Mark Slade and maker, Craig Stansborough. The first wine, a dollop of Shiraz, was crafted in a tin shed! Humble beginnings for an address that has not only proven to be among the most lauded of the Barossa but arguably, the most visionary.

‘...the detail, vivacity and intensity of the Purple Hands wines are compelling.’

Stansborough was awarded 2014 Winemaker of the Year by the Barons of Barossa, attesting to his expertise but most impressively, to peer recognition of his prowess. As much as the prescience of Stansborough and Slade is impressive, the detail, vivacity and intensity of the Purple Hands wines are compelling.

Purple Hands ascended to Halliday Five-Star status before becoming the Most Successful Exhibitor-Small Producer at the Barossa Wine Show 2019, with a whopping eight gold medals: fitting for ‘outstanding single vineyard wines of quite remarkable elegance’, opined Halliday.

While a plot of Shiraz in the home Stansborough vineyard, lodged in a cooler Barossan corner near Williamtown constituted Purple Hands’ first plantings, the great Italian indigenes Montepulciano and Aglianico soon joined the fray. A veritable 32-acre sluice of friable red clay over limestone has become a fertile glimpse into Australia’s vinous future.

‘...savoury, nourishing wines.’

Purple Hands Planta Circa Grenache

After all, this Italian duo hails from dry and torrid turf not dissimilar to the Barossa. Moreover, they are late ripeners and far from thirsty. The confluence was clear, serving as an ethical barometer as much as cadence for savoury, nourishing wines.

In addition, dry-grown Grenache, trained as gnarled bush vines, is sourced from the Zerk Vineyard abutting Lyndoch. The nearby Woodlands plot, however, is the jewel in the crown. It boasts plantings dating from circa 1880, all on original rootstock. The Cabernet, prodigious of depth and detail, is possibly the oldest planting of this cultivar in the world. Ancestor Shiraz and Grenache, too, are nurtured alongside. Vine age is equal to or greater than 125 years!

‘This hallowed site fuels the top-drawer Planta Circa wines.’

This hallowed site fuels the top-drawer Planta Circa wines. The first release was Cabernet 2013 which became the top-rated Cabernet in the 2016 Halliday Guide, anointed with 97 points. Subsequent releases received 98, 96 and 98 points respectively, bearing in mind that 2015 was not made due to negligible fruit quality. Vintage 2018 marks the inaugural release of a Shiraz and Grenache bottling to round out the suite of icons.
