Winery of the Year 2019 – Seville Estate

Congratulations to winemaker Dylan McMahon and all of the team at Seville Estate on being named Winery of the Year by James Halliday at the 2019 Wine Companion Awards.

Seville Estate on being named Winery of the Year

Seville Estate was established in 1972 by Dr Peter and Margaret McMahon with a first vintage released in 1976. Today, their grandson Dylan McMahon is at the helm as general manager and head winemaker.

Back-to-back vintages producing consistently brilliant wines has earned Seville Estate one of the most prestigious winery awards in Australia. With a new owner and new investment, the acreage  has expanded and the new restaurant and accommodations are super stylish yet understated (not unlike their wines). But, and this is important, Seville Estate under the watchful eye of Dylan McMahon has stayed true his grandfather’s vision by making the best wines from the fruit, vines and terroir that they believe in, as Dr Peter McMahon did.

For Dylan McMahon, it’s personal, as it is for so many winemakers who are bequeathed the madness that is a life in wine. He grew up with Seville Estate, so there’s deep satisfaction in bringing home this award after a mere 14 years.

“With its absolutely dazzling array of great wines made over the 2015, ’16 and ’17 vintages, I instantly knew that it had to be the Winery of the Year.”

James Halliday has awarded Seville Estate his 2019 Winery of the Year, the reason he gave for his decision was compelling. It was, for James, a revelation upon rereading his notes. And for many wine lovers, this award will make sense. Seville Estate consistently make great, highly-praised, award-winning wine. Backing that up is winemaker Dylan McMahon apparent disinterest in resting on his laurels. James Halliday wrote on his Wine Companion website of why he chose Seville Estate, ‘A consistent winner of gold medals and trophies at the Yarra Valley Wine Show and further afield, Seville Estate is a red five-star winery, its name also printed in red. Only Australia’s top 100 wineries (out of 2835) are thus identified. When I was proofreading the pages for the 2019 Halliday Wine Companion, the Seville Estate entry – in particular its tasting notes – hit me in the face. With its absolutely dazzling array of great wines made over the 2015, ’16 and ’17 vintages, I instantly knew that it had to be the Winery of the Year.’

This award follows last year’s winner Mount Mary, where winemaker Sam Middleton is also the founder’s grandson. The late Dr Peter McMahon and Dr John Middleton were medical colleagues and their competitive friendship extended far beyond the surgery to exploring terroir and elevating the Yarra Valley to heights it enjoys today. It’s good to see the third generation keeping the competition alive. This time it’s Seville Estate that has raised the bar for Yarra Valley wine on a national stage. Congratulations!

“Seville Estate, in foothills of the Dandenongs, is hilly and rugged with great ghost gums that block out the sun… it’s beautiful to behold.”
