Xavier Vignon Arcane

Xavier Vignon's Arcane Grenache and Syrah wines

Discover the Arcane Grenache and Syrah blends from the Côtes-du-Rhône and Châteauneuf-du-Pape of Xavier Vignon, master blender from the Rhône. The Arcane series includes Le Pape, Le Diable, Le Soleil and La Lune. Is it a coincidence that these wines feature Roman numerals? Lot’s of Xs and Vs. They certainly bear his signature of layer upon layer of blended flavours and textures. There is also a saline mineral quality that is present across his all of his wines. See the Xavier Vignon portfolio here.

Xavier Vignon Arcane XV Le Diable, Vin de France 2015

The Devil, Le Diable, is 100% “pure” Mourvèdre.

The fruit is sourced from 17 parcels from across the Vaucluse. Extra time (several weeks) is taken with cold maceration prior to the ferment. This allows slow extraction of flavour compounds and minerals without harsh tannins. In the glass is a young, yet incredibly approachable and beautifully integrated Mourvèdre. Dark berry fruit, lively herbs both fresh and dry, full-bodied and well structured with an unsettling purity for a wine named Le Diable.

Xavier Vignon Arcane XIX Le Soleil Côtes-du-Rhône 2015

The sun, Le Soleil, is an old vine GSM.

80% (mostly centenarian) Grenache, 10% Syrah (50-year-old high-density vines) and 10% Mourvèdre (80-year-old vines). The parcels of fruit for this wine have been selected to achieve a balance between density and freshness. Those providing the density average twice that of the mineral salt concentration and density measured in the average grape. The balance has been chosen for the altitude and exposure of the terroir to provide freshness. Out of the lab and into the glass, the wine is an incredible Côtes-du-Rhône at this level. Dark cherry and chocolate, hinting at salinity.

Xavier Vignon Arcane XVIII La Lune Côtes-du-Rhône 2010

The moon, La Lune, is a regional blend 100% old-vine Syrah.

"Yes, the 2010 Cotes du Rhone Arcane XVII La Lune is the current release. It's 100% Syrah, selected from high-altitude vineyards in the Southern Rhône, but it comes across as almost northern in style, offering up hints of pepper, liquorice and red currants. It has bright acids but also fine tannins and a surprising degree of elegance on the long, mouthwatering finish. One of the finest expressions of Syrah I can recall from the Southern Rhône, it should drink well for up to 10 years." Joe Czerwinski

Lepape Label

Le Pape Label

Xavier Vignon Arcane V Le Pape Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2010

The Pope, Le Pape, is a blend 100% centenarian vine (and older) Grenache.

The name of the Le Pape may be a nod to the region, Vignon’s water into wine approach (more on that) or that the Le Pape is the apotheosis of his winemaking. As with all of Xavier Vignon’s wines, they are arcane, shrouded in mystery with layers and complexity. The sources of the wines are a tightly held secret.

The making of this wine is laborious, to say the least. Employing many of the slow extraction techniques used in his other wines, Vignon takes the La Pape to another level. The wine, again selected from parcels for their mineral salt concentration, is put into oak barrels. Those barrels are then put into concrete vats and submerged in Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine. This technique follows a Bordelais by submerging the barrels in the sea ‐ Vignon has changed this method from water into wine. Cutting off the oxygen supply, this hyper-reductive ageing process lasts for 60 months. After that, the wines take another year in bottle before release.

Layers are just one of the signatures of Vignon's wines. The Le Pape shows millefeuille layer complexity in the glass and, of course, salinity and purity but also youthfulness. Blue/black fruit, floral perfume and charcuterie and spice notes. It’s rich and textured and dense and the crowning glory of Vignon’s Arcane series. An utterly brilliant wine.
