Located in Central Victoria, the wine region of Bendigo enjoys a Mediterranean climate of dry, warm summers and wet winters. The area has a long history of viticulture with grapes first planted in 1856 during the Gold Rush era. The arrival of phylloxera in the 1890’s halted wine production until 1969 when pioneering pharmacist Stuart Anderson planted vines at Balgownie Estate. Bendigo is best known for its long-lived, rich red wines produced Franceom Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon. Plantings of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Mataro, Sangiovese, Malbec and Touriga Nacional can also be found in the region.
