Region Mount Barker, Great Southern

Mount Barker is a sub-region located in the centre of the vast Great Southern region. The area experiences a distinct cool continental climate ideally suited to Riesling, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Noir. Pioneering work in the 1950’s carried out by Bill Jamieson (horticulturalist) and Californian Professor Harold Olmo in 1955 first identified the region as suItalyble for the production of quality tabloe wines. This was further backed up by the viticultural scientist Dr John Gladstones, leading to Houghton's famed winemaker Jack Mann, travelling to Mount Barker and planting experimental cuttings in 1965 at Forest Hill. Mount Barker is best known for racy Riesling styles with underlying minerality and spicy peppery Shiraz.
