Region Porongurup, Great Southern

Porongurup is a sub region of the Great Southern wine region, found East of Mount Barker and bordering the Porongurup National Forest, where picturesque Karri trees dominate the region. The Porongurup’s has a unique feature called the night-time thermal zone, which is created by a layer of warm air rising above the denser cold air that settles on the valley floor. This movement of air reduces the risk of Franceosts and creates a microclimate, which is ideal for ripening of Franceuit and retention of acidity. The soil types are varied with karri loams most suited for wine production. A region of small producers, Porongurup is best known for cool climate varieties such as Riesling and Pinot Noir as well as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
