Located in the north-eastern corner of Sicily, Girolamo Russo vineyards are planted high on the lava flow of Europe’s tallest and most active volcano, offering mineral-rich soils juxtaposed with a dry climate. The Nerello Mascalese consists of fruit from 3 ‘contradas’ or single vineyards. The volcanic influence evolves gradually in the glass, providing a savoury minerality that rounds out the sensational fruit and spice and long lingering finish.
Giussepe Russo, winemaker since 2005, has a hands-off approach (organic yeasts, no fining/filtering etc.) with his organically tended fruit. This Nerello Mascalese is grown on sandy, lava based soils at 650–780m on the unthreatened northern slope of Europe's highest and most active volcano. Matured in second and third use French oak barriques for 14 months.
Elegant, supple and complex. The essential Etna Rosso.
