From Stonegarden, a 162-year-old vineyard planted near Springton at 400m altitude in the coldest, driest and most remote part of the Eden Valley. The vines struggle to yield 1/2 tonne/acre on sandy loam over yellow clay and granite. Some whole-bunches are utilised in the fermentation. Limited production, numbered bottles.
From a single parcel of vines, planted in 1853 in Springton in the Eden Valley, this has a strikingly complex and fragrant nose with pepper, wild sage, gun flint, rose petals, pastry and orange peel, as well as redcurrants, raspberries, blueberries and red cherries. The palate has such fine, silky and elegant tannins that draw very long and chiseled. Raspberry and red-cherry flavors are cradled long, fresh and fine. Elegance and power. Superb grenache.

Deep, bright purple/red colour, with a similarly bright, fresh, youthfully undeveloped aroma of bubblegum, cherry and raspberry pastille fruit. It’s fresh, bold and straightforward. The wine has a good solid backbone and the tannins are ripe and fleshy. There's a gorgeous sweet brandied-cherry core to the wine. Very good: high potential.

Raspberry, fennel, a little spice, flowers, and something like an old brick you’ve found in the bottom of the garden. It’s firm, dry in tannin, kind of rugged, but pretty too, cool acidity, slight warmth, bold finish. Feels a little locked in at present, but the quality, and density of old vine fruit is certainly there. Needs time.

Alex Head is part of the new generation of small Barossa winemakers creating wines in a new, more elegant style. Inspired by the wines of the Rhone valley, Alex Head sources small-parcels of old vine fruit and uses traditional vinification techniques to produce wines with perfume, vibrant fruit and savoury complexity. Head’s aim is maximum drinkability, which he successfully achieves by emphasising freshness, balance, texture and fruit purity. Eight wines are made under the Head label, including the Blonde and the Brunette inspired by the legendary wines of the Northern Rhone.
