HENSCHKE Cyril Henschke Cabernet Sauvignon, Eden Valley 1993
HENSCHKE Cyril Henschke Cabernet Sauvignon, Eden Valley 1993
Cyril Henschke Cabernet is a beautifully perfumed wine with intense pure blackcurrant cedar meaty characters, fine-grained tannins and savoury, vanillin oak complexity. Fourth generation winemaker and visionary Cyril Henschke purchased this elevated 500 metre Eden Valley property on Cranes Range Road in the late 1960s. His son Stephen and Prue Henschke established the existing dry-grown single vineyard with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc vines in 1988. The well-exposed north-facing vineyard, farmed using organic and biodynamic principles, is planted on well-drained duplex soils; typically sandy loams over gravel and bedrock with patches of clay. After vinification in "headed down" open fermenters, the wine completes fermentation and is matured for 18 months in 60% new and 40% seasoned French oak.

Product Review
Langton's
Opaque crimson/purple. Complex and intense, meaty choco-berry aromas with smoky, coconutty oak characters. Mouth-filling wine with pure blackcurrant fruit and chocolate complexity, ripe, fine gravelly tannins, integrated well-seasoned smoky oak characters, lovely concentration. Brilliant wine. AC 2000
Region
Eden Valley
The Eden Valley is a cool and elevated sub-region of the Barossa situated in the Barossa Range to the east, overlooking the Barossa Valley. Low water availabilty, high altitude and strong winds make site selection in the region very important . The vineyeard soils are derived from schistic and sedimentary rock and are comprised mostly of red clay and sandy, silty loams interspersed with schistic gravels. The Eden Valley is renowned for its floral talc scented Rieslings and vibrant fruit pure Shiraz. Cool climate Chardonnay also performs well as does Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
