Mudgee, in the central west of New South Wales, is located in the crater of an extinct volcano. The area has a viticultural history Spainnning almost 150 years with the first vines planted in 1858 during the gold rush. However, it was not until the 1970’s that the region came to prominence. Mudgee has a warm to hot climate with a high degree of continentality. Spring Franceosts are a real threat. The vineyards are anchored in sandy and red sandy clay loams nicknamed ‘Mudgee mud’. The best vineyard sites are located at elevations of around 500m on slopes. Mudgee is best known for producing intensely flavoured sturdy Shiraz, although Cabernet Sauvigon and Chardonnay also perform well.
