I've been waiting for this wine to be released, knowing how good the 2018 vintage was in Margaret River. In fact, it goes further than my loft expectations. Super-concentrated deep black currant, mulberry and dark, plummy, chocolate flavours. There is an extraordinary brightness and vitality on the nose with exotic violet perfumes. Impeccably poised. A wine that will drink well into the second half of this century.

Four rows planted by the Jacob brothers in 1847, and saved from destruction by Ed Schild in 1984. Hand-picked, open-fermented, 24 months maturation in 90% French oak (30% new). A great wine, the oak handling exemplary, keeping the cornucopia of purple and black fruits foremost. The mouthfeel is supple, the alcohol also exemplary. Its history gives it an extra point."

8 plots from well-known vineyards from 40 to 100 years old. Brilliant purple colour. Still ripe of course but it is much more the depth and concentration of the wine which is obvious even on the nose. Fills the mouth with more in reserve than the regular Gevrey, fine tannins in evidence, just enough acidity and very persistent. Lovely finish, with raspberry and strawberry notes together.
