LANGTONS is proud to offer this unique auction lot of a half-century vertical of every vintage of Redman Coonawarra Cabernet from 1971 to 2021.

LANGTONS Head of Auction Michael Anderson had this to say of the collection.'At auction, Redman Cabernet has a reputation for reliability in the best sense. Family heritage counts for so much here as the balance of looking back and looking forward. Of course, the wines appeal to a contemporary palate, but there is history to reckon with. It had better be an improvement if you're going to make a change. The changing style of the Redman wines has evolved over time, with three family winemakers at the helm. It’s seen generational change with consistency of the medium-bodied style, rather than a reaction to changing trends. Firm beliefs don't buckle so easily. This 51-bottle collection maps out not only the Redman history but also the last half-century of Coonawarra. The set comes to auction directly from Redman, so provenance is assured. Rarity, quality, heritage, and provenance in one lot? That is the gold we search for at auction.'

Looking deeper into the auction, Michael goes on to say, ‘Along with the set, we are able to offer a number of large format bottlings from Redman. The larger format is a cellarists dream, slowing the ageing process down and maintaining freshness (a secret used by some Champagne houses to preserve the freshness over extended ageing periods). This slow pace means the wines hit their peak performance later but maintain them for longer. For hosts or guests, however, the magnum is always a winner; a statement of generosity and intent. That signature ‘thunk!’ of a magnum bottle being set on a table sets expectations that long night and in this case full glasses of classic Coonawarra cabernet from Redman. Where’s my invitation?’

The Redman Family Story

The Redman family story began in Coonawarra in 1901 with William (Bill) Redman, who arrived in the region and secured a position at the old John Riddoch winery, which would later become Wynns Coonawarra Estate. In 1908, his trade learnt, he struck out on his own, purchasing a small winery of 16 hectares and produced his first vintage in 1909, selling the wine in bulk to larger producers and setting the foundation for what would become a legacy of fine winemaking.

Redman wines have a notable track record at auctions, often attracting attention for their reliability and the ability to mature gracefully. This consistent performance places them alongside other reputable labels such as Wynns and Penfolds, which are known for producing wines that show well over time. The appeal of Redman’s older vintages at auction speaks to the label’s prestige and the trust placed in its quality by collectors and enthusiasts alike.

The winemaking process at Redman is rooted in tradition. There have only been three winemakers at the helm, with two viticulturists, meaning there’s an intimate knowledge of the vineyards and style. The use of open fermenters allows for better extraction of flavours and tannins, and the wines are aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels. This meticulous approach results in wines that are complex and deeply expressive of the Coonawarra terroir. For many collectors, the Redman wines have been a consistent go-to wine showcasing the style of Coonawarra.

Wine critics James Halliday, Katie Spain, Nick Stock, and third-generation Mal Redman discuss the significance of tasting 50 years of Redman Cabernet in 2023.

A touch of notable Coonawarra wine brands

Bill Redman's influence extended beyond his own vineyard. He was a key figure in the creation of the Woodley Treasure Chest, a collection that highlighted Australia's finest wines and played a significant role in establishing Coonawarra's reputation. These wines are also a rare find at auction. The Redman family has continued to uphold this legacy, with each generation actively involved in the winemaking process. This hands-on involvement ensures that the wines maintain the high standards set by Bill Redman, consistently delivering on the promise of quality and authenticity.

Owen Redman followed in his father’s footsteps, making the Rouge Homme brand from 1952-1965. Upon selling Rouge Homme to Lindemans, the Redman brand was born in 1966 with Redman Claret often being a household wine to enjoy. Owen continued to make the Redman wines until 1981 when his sons Bruce, a Roseworthy graduate, and Mal assumed winemaking responsibilities in 1982.

Now legends of Coonawarra themselves, Mal and Bruce Redman continue to put their stamp on the family business, evolving the style as technology continues to advance. The brothers reflect on the body of work of 50 years of Cabernet Sauvignon, noting why this is so significant.

The winery's focus on cabernet sauvignon and shiraz showcases the best of Coonawarra's capabilities. In addition, Redman Wines is committed to sustainable viticulture practices, reflecting their dedication to preserving the environment and ensuring the long-term health of their vineyards. There remains a focus on shiraz and cabernet, although the family is experimenting with some other varietals.

The style of wine continues to evolve, but showcases the famous medium-bodied style.
