Lots and lots of lots Auction Highlights February 2023

Lots and lots of lots. February at auction was a bumper month. Our digital hammer fell on lots that accounted for more than 34,000 bottles. For context that is approximately 10,000 bottles more than February 2022. The auction market is in rude health. Browse and Bid at auction or contact our team of auctioneers to evaluate your collection and sell your wine.

Top 10

Leroy, the King! The inimitable Burgundian takes the top spot (and the first runner up too) for the month of February. Notably, the 1999 Grand Cru Chambertin exceeded the price paid for our top burgundy at auction in 2022, also Domaine Leroy. Read our Auctions Top 10 2022 to find out more.

Domaines de la Romanée-Conti and d'Auvenay feature with three cuvées apiece in our top 10. While we might expect DRC to command space in any top 10 of note, it’s worth pausing to consider the presence of Domaine d'Auvenay and how it keeps pace with the great Domaine.

‘...keeps pace with the great Domaine.’

Breaking the Burgundopoly in the top 10 is Château Pétrus. That thick stratum of magical, mysterious blue clay subsoil continues to whisper muse-like in the ear of collectors. The venerable ‘82 deferring to the awesome ‘15 in order of potential. The 2015 has garnered acclaim from across the wine media with critics gushing and doling out five perfect 100-point scores. It’s worth noting that in his 2018 review of the flawless vintage, James Suckling notes that it ‘needs at least five or six years.’ That would be now. Read Ned Goodwin MW’s article on the Sheer Hedonism of Chateau Pétrus.
