About this wine

ATA RANGI McCrone Vineyard Pinot Noir, Martinborough

Ata Rangi's McCrone Vineyard was planted in 2001 using a mix of clones that have become part of the Ata Rangi fabric: Abel or ‘Gumboot’ clone, Dijon selections (115 and 777) and Clone 5.

The McCrone vineyard is just around the corner from the Ata Rangi home block but the soils are remarkably different. Whilst the Martinborough Terrace is predominantly alluvial gravels, there is a compact seam of clay which threads its way across a section of the terrace, fanning out over the gravels and creating a cooling effect on the roots in the soil. The McCrone site catches this seam and delivers a distinctively different aroma and flavour profile than that of the Ata Rangi Pinot Noir. The McCrone vineyard balances the energy and complexity of the whole bunch components of the wine with the weight and power that has become synonymous with this site.

ABOUT THE WINERY
Ata Rangi
Ata Rangi is a small family-owned winery located in Martinborough on the southern tip of New Zealand’s North Island. The name Ata Rangi translates into “dawn sky” or “new beginning”. The winery was established by Clive Paton and his family, who were among the first to plant vines in 1980. Their flagship Pinot Noir comprises grapes from the famed “gumboot clone”, allegedly stolen from the prestigious Domaine de la Romanée-Conti vineyard and smuggled into New Zealand in a boot. Ata Rangi has plantings of Pinot Noir, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay, with a total of nine wines produced. In 2010 the Ata Rangi Pinot Noir was honoured with the inaugural Tipuranga Teitei o Aotearoa or "Grand Cru of New Zealand" award.
