CHAMPAGNE COESSENS LARGILLIER, Blanc de Noirs Brut NV Bottle
About this wine
Jerome Coessens has been producing Champagnes since 2006, although his family have been growing grapes for five generations. His Blanc de Noirs is drawn from two plots across a 3.36 hectare monopole known as Largillier, hewn of limestone and clay on the Côte des Bar, a sub-zone in the south-east of the region. The Côte is contiguous to Chablis, a short distance farther south. It shares the same geology, meaning that instead of the friable chalk farther north in Champagne, the calcareous element is Kimmeridgian limestone, identical to the Grands Crus of Chablis. This imparts a mineral intensity, while the gentler southern climate facilitates ripeness of the grapes and an ensuing softness to the Champagne. This is straight up Pinot Noir, with sensitive dosage to the legal equivalent of an Extra Brut (<6g/L). It is a bolder wine than the excellent Brut Nature cuvée, with greater dimensions to the fruit and a longer finish. Think kirsch and fecund strawberry scents, along with a whiff of truffle and toast from the extended time on lees. There is no oak, allowing for versatility as an aperitif, or synergy with a variety of foods, particularly roast chicken and pork.

Bold, flamboyant fruit here with red-berry, red-plum and cherry notes. The freshness and flesh is impressive. Really round and expressive.

The NV Largillier Blanc de Noirs Brut is a pure single-vineyard Pinot Noir with a deep and intense bouquet of ripe, concentrated fruits but also complex mineral and salty expressions (marl soils) that remind me of Jura and Chablis. Pure, highly finessed and fruity on the palate, this is a very elegant and balanced Pinot Noir with remarkable finesse and elegance. Very expressive but also charming. This is a pure 2013 vintage that was fermented in stainless steel.

(2014 vintage.) Cool sea air and yeasty nose, then a taut and precise full-powered palate, serious but chewy. Demands attention but there's a lovely deep bed of red fruit swimming beneath that makes it worth it. Drink to 2025.

Based on 2018 vintage, a warm one. Yet this is an immensely classy grower act, bridling low dosage, a phenomenal site virtually usurped by Selosse in Largilier and all Pinot Noir. An incantation of power and weightlessness, all tatami straw, roasted hazlenuts and lemon curd. This is almost Meursault with fizz. Great stuff here.
