About this wine
Château l'Evangile, Pomerol
Château L’Evangile, one of Pomerol’s finest estates, was purchased by Domaines de Rothschild, owners of Château Lafite, in 1999. New cellars were built in time for the 2005 vintage and an extensive replanting program was completed in 2018. Vineyard area totals 22 hectares, 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc, farmed organically since 2007 and certified in 2015. At harvest the grapes from each plot are kept separate, enabling selection of only the best parcels for the Grand Vin.
Vinification takes place in 20, temperature-controlled cement vats ranging in size from 35 to 81 hectolitres. Château L’Evangile is aged in an average of 70% new, French oak barrels for around 18 months. Between 2000 and 3000 cases of the Grand Vin are made each year. There is a second wine, Blason de L’Evangile. L’Evangile is a full-bodied, rich, elegant, powerful, opulent, long-lived Pomerol style.

Decanter
A well-articulated wine with elegance and serious expression of place. The 16% Cabernet Franc (alongside 1% Cabernet Sauvignon, the first year in the blend) gives such an enticing nose, so perfumed - you really get a nose full of flowers here which I love. There's depth on the palate straight away - it's concentrated but comes across in layers as opposed to overt volume or voluptuousness. Tannins are sleek and well integrated and there’s spice-edged blackcurrant, red and black cherries, plums, liquorice, cedar and cinnamon nuances. There’s succulence to the acidity, which is fresh and cooling, and clear opulence throughout, but it’s still quite shy, just showing signs of life. A sophisticated wine with a long future.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW
The 2019 L'Evangile is made from 83.5% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc, and 0.5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep garnet-purple colored, it charges out with bold notes of baked plums, blackberry preserves, and star anise with hints of cinnamon toast, cumin seed, dusty soil, and lavender. Full-bodied, rich, and spicy, the palate delivers mouth-coating blackberry preserves flavors with tons of exotic spice and floral accents, framed by velvety tannins and soft acidity, finishing on a lingering licorice note. One of the more heady, opulent expressions of the vintage, it is a plush, fruity, voluptuous style that will appeal to those seeking acidity on the lower side.

Fruit-tea, blackberry, tile and ripe-fruit aromas follow through to a full body with density and richness. Chocolate and walnut. Dense and seamless with super fruit and length. Lots of fruit. Very polished. Stylized. All the cabernet franc on the estate is in the wine. From organic grapes. Give it at least five to seven years to open. Try after 2026.
