About this wine
Domaine Armand Rousseau Grand Cru, Chambertin
With its distinctive East meets West blue and gold 1932-designed label, Rousseau’s Chambertin is one of Burgundy’s and the world’s greatest and most sought after wines. With 2.56ha of Chambertin—acquired at various times since the 1920s—Rousseau is the largest owner of this historic 12.90 ha Grand Cru that lies between Latricieres Chambertin to the south and Clos de Bèze to the north at between 275-300 metres. Along with Rousseau’s equally mesmerizing Clos de Bèze, the Chambertin is always amongst the best and most long-lived wines of any vintage and even when young you barely notice the 100% new wood given its power and complexity.

Allen Meadows
Tasting note: There is enough wood to notice framing the exuberantly spicy red and dark currant aromas that display an abundance of sauvage and earth nuances. The cool and pure medium weight plus flavors are remarkably refined for a young Chambertin yet there is clearly plenty of power lurking beneath the refined veneer. This is a big but not massive vintage for the Rousseau Cham and I like the sense of proportion and particularly so on the harmonious, superbly long and seamlessly well-balanced finale. As is the case with the 2015 vintage, it's going to be very interesting to see which of these two is the better wine in 15 to 20 years.

100% new oak. Very majestic and autumnal on the nose. Very concentrated and all in the future. Not weak at all with much more obvious ripe fruit in the middle than Clos de Beze. Dense and very dry and savoury but the fruit more than stands up to the new oak. Magnificent. Vibrato.

Medium red, lighter than the Clos de Beze. Wild but distinctly cool aromas of blueberry, crushed black cherry and menthol, complicated by a light medicinal quality. Wonderfully suave and minerally on entry, then sappy and taut in the middle, showing great chewy intensity and energy, an utterly noble texture, and no easy sweetness. The incredibly vibrant, broad, building finish leaves the palate vibrating. I could barely tell that I had spit the wine. Easily the best of these 2012s today.
