About this wine
Domaine Lionnet Pur Granit , Cornas, Cornas
Domaine Lionnet Pur Granit is an evocative and deftly crafted Cornas wine from a name that has been producing wine in the Northern Rhône since the Middle Ages. A classic Cornas from vignerons Corinne Lionnet and husband Ludovic Izerable, it is made with tradition in mind and sustainable practices. Grapes are harvested by hand and vinified as whole bunches with indigenous yeasts. Domaine Lionnet has been certified organic since 2009. This results in wines that are pure, unadulterated Northern Rhône.
The Pur Granit is, as its name suggests, a masterclass in precision and purity. It is focused, energetic and distinctly mineral, hence the ‘pure granite’ of its name. It hails from a one-hectare parcel of Syrah, on a southeast-facing site in the vineyard of Saint-Pierre at 380 metres. This confluence of altitude and pure granitic soil makes for a dense and racy wine. Perfumed with aromas that define Cornas, red berries, black olives, and charcuterie jump evocatively from the glass. Decant to release mocha and violet. Decades of potential for ageing.

The 2020 Cornas Pur Granit is brilliant stuff. Ripe black cherries, blueberries, scorched earth, smoked game, and iron are just some of its nuances, and it's medium to full-bodied, has a pure, layered, focused texture, plenty of tannins, and a great finish. This classic Cornas needs 3-5 years of bottle age and I suspect will still bring drinking spectacularly well in 15+ years.

Dark purple. Displays an array of mineral- and spice-accented dark fruit and floral scents, along with suggestions of olive, licorice and pipe tobacco. Densely packed blackcurrant and bitter cherry flavors slowly flesh out and become spicier and more lively through the back half. Powerful tannins add grip to a strikingly long, smoky finish that emphatically repeats the mineral and spice notes.

Spicy char notes on the nose. In the mouth its full-bodied and ripe but not excessive, really mouthfilling and full of energy. Intense and concentrated with powerful tannins. It's fairly potent in alcohol for a 2020, but the overall effect is balance, freshness, purity and length. Domaine Lionnet is one of the unsung heroes of Cornas, and an organic estate.
