About this wine
FRANKLAND ESTATE Olmo's Reward Cabernet Blend, Frankland River
Olmo’s Reward, named after Dr Harold Olmo, who first identified the viticultural potential of the isolated Frankland River region, is an elegant blended Cabernet. The varietal makeup of this single-vineyard wine shifts with each season, but it’s a story that Cabernet Franc has led for the past decade or more. This remains the intention for this wine in the future, too. The concentrated palate has fine-grained tannins, dark chocolates and savoury, earthy notes leading to a generous and long finish.

This estate-grown Bordeaux blend has become a model of consistency for an ever-increasing number of years. Cassis, blackcurrant, olive, spice, redcurrant, savoury tannins and oak all coalesce on the medium-bodied palate and its long finish. The balance is such that it is guaranteed to age with grace.

A blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec, the 2011 Olmo's Reward is a medium-garnet color with a hint of purple in the rim and is scented of kirsch, mulberries and raspberry preserves, plus hints of cinnamon stick, pencil shavings and bay leaf. Full-bodied and with a sold backbone of firm, grainy tannins and bright acidity, the generous, multi-layered fruit flesh goes on and on at the finish. Drink it now to 2024+.

An estate blend, the major part cabernet franc and malbec, with a small portion of cabernet sauvignon. It has a phalanx of predominantly red berry fruits on its bouquet and elegant, medium-bodied palate; the tannin and oak contribution is minor, albeit necessary.

The Frankland Estate reds are in excellent shape; perhaps the best shape I’ve seen them in. This wine is looking the goods too. Grassy, herb and nut-like notes are washed through with cherry-plum and musk. Complex and come-hither at once. Flying.

Deep, youthful purple/red colour, with an intense, bright, straightforward, youthful, fruit-driven aroma of violets and nutty oak. The wine is medium to full-bodied and a little plain, but only because it's so youthful, one suspects. It's yet to show the charm and complexity of which it seems capable. It needs more time. There is certainly high quality fruit and elegance here. Cellar it! (66% cabernet franc, 27% malbec, 7% cabernet sauvignon)

The finest, most complete Olmo's Reward to date comprising cabernet franc 58% cabernet franc, 26% cabernet sauvignon, 11% malbec and 5% petit verdot. Red fruits, earth and spice sashay across the medium-bodied frame meeting finely crafted tannins. Pure and long on the finish and seems effortless. Certainly effortless to drink.

Compelling wine. Riveted to green herbs, violets, choc-cherry-mint, dark cherry/berry fruit character, a touch of earthiness and black olive thing going on. Sarsaparilla, herbs and earthiness to taste, all set in a very svelte, dark, brooding frame. Midnight across the palate, stealthy, long as you like, tightening with fine tannins and a touch of succulent sweetness as it closes. Magnificent feel here.

An estate-grown Bordeaux blend, throbbing with a juicy kaleidoscope of red, purple, blue and black fruits; fine tannins and carefully managed French oak add up to a win-win scenario.

Deep smelling wine of earth, tobacco, dried flowers, red and black fruits, with a little gum leaf, aniseed, and cedar oak. Medium-bodied, savoury and thick with gravelly tannin, blackcurrant, raspberry, boysenberry and sweet herbs, oak in support, and a long dry sticky tannin finish. Love the freshness mixed with sweet loam and spice. Big personality. A rolling, regional wine that this estate does so well.

The aromas are of red fruits including raspberry and traces of tomato stalk or bush - all very cabernet franc-ish. A bright, fresh, tidy wine of good potential. Firm and tight, balanced and elegant, it's a long-termer and needs age to show of its best. The quality is already abundantly obvious. (72% cabernet franc, 19% cabernet sauvignon, 9% malbec)

A blend of cabernet franc, merlot, cabernet sauvignon and malbec, each variety open-fermented separately, matured for 15 months in French oak. As rich as it its complex and vice versa. A distinguished wine.

Beautiful wine. Elegant, well-flavoured and long. Complex in an effortless way. Florals, dark berries, peppercorns and sweet cedar. An array of spices. Ultra-fine tannin melted straight into the flavour. There’s a whisper of truffle/corn here but, and I don’t say this too often, it works in context. A gentle creaminess to the texture is the icing. This is pretty terrific. Gold standard.

Deep red colour with a good tint of purple, and a lifted fragrance of raspberry and red cherry, cassis, cedar and blueberry hints, the palate full-bodied and firm, densely-packed with flavour and tannins. Concentrated, essency, dense and powerful, it lingers very long on the farewell. Tightly packed. Lots of detail. A most impressive red, cabernet franc clearly leading the charge.

A perfumed red with aromas of lilies combined with a powerful blackberry note. The palate exhibits very powerful but fine-grained tannins and lively, balanced acidity. Lovely, refreshing wine with good development potential and a very long, minerally finish.

Sourced from the estate’s Isolation Ridge vineyard. A cabernet franc-led blend and showing it, via vibrant redder cherry and mulberry-like aromas, concentrated by sympatico oak. It all comes into focus on the palate; intense yet lifted, energetic and mineral. Even tannins add to an impressive complexity and lingering finish.

Blind tasted in a panel – 60-or-so cabernet-based wines from Western Australia.
Medium bodied, just ripe red and black berry fruit characters, earthy spice, some seaweed and green herb notes shot through. Texture is good, length is good, the wine a feast of fruit and spice, mellowness and even flow. Relaxed feel, is perhaps a good way of putting it. That being said, plenty of concentration and detail, and a savoury, seaweedy finish is nice. Very good.

Pretty smelling wine with redcurrant jelly, blackcurrant, flowers, sweet tobacco, cedar and spice. Medium-bodied, succulent yet savoury too, with firm chocolaty tannin, fresh and lively, a little bit of mint in here, but also the perfume of rosehip. Finish is long with a slick of slate-like tannin. Different. Expressive. And very lovely.

Lovely bright purplish colour introduces this classy wine. It's fagrant with appealing raspberry and blackcurrant scents, backed up by sensitively-handled cedary and chocolatey oak input. It offers lovely freshness on the nose, at the same time suggesting real power. The palate follows suit with a solid undercurrent of concentrated fruit extract, rich and long, tangy with acidity and supported by firm, grainy tannins. A wine that cries out for bottle age to build on its excellent foundations.

The fragrance of Franc, with support most importantly from Merlot, presents a lifted and fine-boned style of sweet fruit presence. Epic Franc tannins of super fine-ground structure and grand endurance define a finish of benchmark line and length. The greatest Olmo's I've tasted yet.
