About this wine
McHenry Hohnen Calgardup Brook Vineyard Chardonnay, Margaret River
One of McHenry Hohnen’s three family estate vineyards, Calgardup Brook lies within the Karridale sub-region of Margaret River. Its coastal position, northern aspect and soil of sandy loam, clay and limestone, produce an energetic, minerally chardonnay that’s never short of intensity and length. The biodynamically grown Gingin clone chardonnay is hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed and fermented in French oak barriques (30% new). To retain, or to balance, natural acidity, vintages may undergo no, or partial, malolactic fermentation.

One of a trio of single-site iterations of chardonnay. Sand and limestone. The most dynamic in terms of fruit intensity and formidable length. Glazed quince, truffle, cashew and a hint of brulee. Nothing overwrought. The mid-palate, similarly weighted and densely packed, unraveling along a skein of sea-spray freshness with classy oak directives, nicely embedded. Palate-staining, such is the torque and intensity. Yet as with most Aussie exemplars, sophistication is bundled into a package of poise and effortless drinkability. Exceptional stuff. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink now.

Precision, definition and length. Chardonnay from McHenry Hohnen has been a bit of rock ’n’ roll of late, and Calgardup Brook just pips the others with a chartbuster. There’s the usual citrus theme going on here, the pink grapefruit and pith, zest and juicy acidity. There’s also the flintiness, the seamless integration of oak, the attention to detail throughout and mostly, the energy and drive. Complex and complete.

Following in the footsteps (albeit skipping to a slightly different tune) of the cooler 2019 and 2017 vintages, the 2021 season endured a number of significant downpours prior to and during harvest. The first, occurring in early February (right before the Chardonnay pick), caused some issues for those producers who weren't able to alter the picking time and who didn't have the freedom to manage the vineyard aggressively. For those who did, the 2021 Chardonnays, from what I've seen, appear to be glorious. So to this wine: the 2021 Calgardup Brook Vineyard Chardonnay has notes of gray rocks and minerals on the palate. It is sandy and taut, and it’s all about the spices and the flowers (green apple florals). It is saline and oh so pretty. It’s interesting how different this wine is both in flavor and shape from the other two wines—the impact of this cool, wet vintage is intense on this wine. It offers almost black tea/jasmine tea, bottom of the pot type stuff—Earl Grey tea even. It’s pure, and it's fine-boned.
