RIESLINGFREAK No. 1 Grounds of Grandeur Riesling, Clare Valley
Rieslingfreak No.1 Grounds of Grandeur pays respect to both the vineyard and the grower of the Riesling fruit. Made from a single vineyard, Rieslingfreak No.1 is only made from exceptional vintages, when both climate conditions and vineyard expressions are superior. The grapes are hand-harvested and chilled for 48 hours, before whole bunch pressing. the grapes are hand harvested, the berries are then pressed to 420L per tonne, with only the virgin juice extracted. The juice is then settled in the tank before racking into a 1500L barrel. After the juice has gone through wild fermentation, the wine is then held in barrel for a minimum of 12 months before bottling.
"Light yellow colour; some free SO2 on the nose together with dried-herb and seaweed notes. The bouquet really built with exposure to air, adding a subtle nuttiness. It's light and reserved in the mouth, with medium intensity of straightforward herbal fruit, falling away a little quickly at the back end. It finishes clean and dry with a subtle trace of grip. Rieslingfreak was founded by winemaker John Hughes.
The inaugural vintage was 2009 with a single vineyard Clare Valley Riesling. After that, the Rieslingfreak portfolio expanded to include the Eden Valley and Polish Hill River regions, showing dry, off-dry, Kabinett, sparkling and fortified styles. Each wine is given a number to denote region and style.

In 2016, John was a Young Gun of Wine finalist. He followed that with a clean sweep of the 2017 Royal Sydney Wine Show, winning five trophies–including Best in Show, the first time a Riesling had taken the gong since 2003. After a lifetime in the vineyard and eight years of graft, John Hughes became an overnight success. John is now considered to be amongst the great Riesling makers in Australia, taking the wine to new audiences and raising the standard for the industry.
