About this wine

In the northwest corner of the Barossa Valley is a small, old vineyard planting of Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro. Planted sometime in the 1940’s or 50’s, it’s been managed organically for around 40 years. The 2021 is only the sixth Shiraz wine selection bottled as a single vineyard by Spinifex, they’ve made wine from the vineyard since 2005. A dark, broody and exotically spiced Barossa Valley Shiraz. Aromatically complex, high-toned pepper, vermouth herbs, iodine, liquored cherry and blackberry fruits overlay delicate peat smoke, sandalwood, cinnamon, star anise spice and deeper wood ash and warm leather notes. Still very primary. The full yet compact palate, strong tart dark plum and blackberry fruits on attack turn to deeper and earthier cassis and plum fruit, black tea, brown woody spices and bitter chocolate. Fresh dark fruit acids and tight, fine, slatey tannins drive a fresh finish.

ABOUT THE WINERY
Spinifex
A top-notch boutique producer, Spinifex was started in 2001 by husband and wife team, Peter Schell and Magali Gely. Their winemaking philosophy is largely influenced by Gely’s South-Western French roots and the duo’s extensive experience working vintages across France. Spinifex has a strong focus on blends produced from varieties such as Mourvèdre (Mataro) in addition to Mediterranean varieties well suited to the Barossa Valley including Grenache, Cinsault, Carignan, Grenache Gris and Marsanne. Grapes for the range of wines are sourced from a number of growers in the Barossa and Eden Valleys. Spinifex is also a member of the Artisans of the Barossa, a group that focuses on environmental sustainability and traditions of the region.
