About this wine
Tyrell’s 4 Acres Shiraz, Hunter Valley
Tyrell’s 4 Acres Shiraz comes from the pioneering estate’s Sacred Sites range, heroing singular vineyards that best express the unique terroir of the Hunter and Tyrell’s incredible holdings. 4 Acres is the oldest block on the Ashmans property. A reserve wine, it is only produced in top vintages.
Fruit is handpicked and sorted, before fermentation with 15% whole bunches. It is then matured for 14 months in a two-year-old Stockinger oak cask. Tyrell’s describe the 4 Acres as one of the most distinctive Shiraz wines in Australia, an evocative illustration of the singularity of Hunter Valley Shiraz. Bright, lifted, and energetic, red fruit and spice perfume the wine. A true Hunter Valley ‘Burgundy’ style, it is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a fruit-forward wine with great length, complexity, and surprising freshness.

Decanter
Aromas of savoury chamois spiced leather, showing nice development. Palate remains fresh and bright, with crunchy red fruits overlaying supple, mature tannins.

Always tricky reviewing just bottled (couple of weeks) baby wines like these; they build up and improve dramatically over a few years. Still, so far, so good. My two boys, Charles and Eddie, born in 2007 and 2011 respectively, have done well out of the Hunter Valley. Pissed it down after they both popped out late Spring – pretty much no Shiraz picked in 2008 and 2012. The little buggers.
It’s a different style of 4 Acres, yet still identifiably familiar – a little of 2006 and perhaps a little of 2004 – yet not quite either. Cranberry, blackberry and boysenberry, stalk/menthol, pepper (white) and latent violet perfume – subtle red earth. It’s just to medium bodied, pure and fresh, but quite tannic this vintage – not just built on acid this time – with open weave grainy tannin contributing significantly to structure. Almost more like a Pinot Noir than Shiraz with an equally fine fanning and sustained finish. One of our unique Australian wines.

Light, clear crimson; produced from the 133-year-old plantings of the 4 Acres estate vineyard, hand-picked, open-fermented and matured in a (used) 2700-litre cask. It is a lovely, elegant, light- to medium-bodied wine that marries elegance and finesse with power, yielding only to its siblings.
