About this wine
Tyrell’s 4 Acres Shiraz, Hunter Valley
Tyrell’s 4 Acres Shiraz comes from the pioneering estate’s Sacred Sites range, heroing singular vineyards that best express the unique terroir of the Hunter and Tyrell’s incredible holdings. 4 Acres is the oldest block on the Ashmans property. A reserve wine, it is only produced in top vintages.
Fruit is handpicked and sorted, before fermentation with 15% whole bunches. It is then matured for 14 months in a two-year-old Stockinger oak cask. Tyrell’s describe the 4 Acres as one of the most distinctive Shiraz wines in Australia, an evocative illustration of the singularity of Hunter Valley Shiraz. Bright, lifted, and energetic, red fruit and spice perfume the wine. A true Hunter Valley ‘Burgundy’ style, it is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a fruit-forward wine with great length, complexity, and surprising freshness.

A deceiving light to mid-ruby, this shiraz has the youthful allure and aroma of high quality pinot, once called 'Hunter River Burgundy'. Soaring bing cherry and wild strawberry notes, scented further with lilac and creamy kirsch, belie the gentle hue. Medium of weight, precise of detail and yet, imperious of vinosity and length, this makes for a compelling contrast to the Vat 9. The latter, sturdy and fidelitous to type; this, hedonistic and utterly delicious out of the gates. From plantings dating to 1879.

The 4 Acres vineyard was planted in 1879. Pinot-like in colour and texture with amazing spice and depth, this is an uncommercial wine for those who can forego preconceptions and try the unknown.

Typically, 4 Acres Shiraz is a lighter, more crunchy red, and ripe vintages such as 2007 and 2014 might be considered somewhat atypical. In some respects, you see the signature of the vineyard more clearly in ‘lesser’ vintages. This wine is fully allocated to members with standing orders, so not currently for sale, though many a canny TWF reader will already have their sweaty little mitts on a few bottles by now.
Fresh red berries, perhaps some blackberry, dusting of pepper, floral perfume, subtle dried herb and earth. Light to medium bodied, bright and fresh with a cranberry crunch, fresh picked red fruits, again the gentle earthiness and perfume, with a light drag of fine-grained tannin, drawing out to a playful rasp on a long cool finish. I feel it’s a wine for much later than now, and where the ripe vintages give from the get go, this will evolve and develop into a beautiful fine expression of Hunter ‘Burgundy’. It’s a lovely thing, for sure.
