About this wine
Tyrell’s 4 Acres Shiraz, Hunter Valley
Tyrell’s 4 Acres Shiraz comes from the pioneering estate’s Sacred Sites range, heroing singular vineyards that best express the unique terroir of the Hunter and Tyrell’s incredible holdings. 4 Acres is the oldest block on the Ashmans property. A reserve wine, it is only produced in top vintages.
Fruit is handpicked and sorted, before fermentation with 15% whole bunches. It is then matured for 14 months in a two-year-old Stockinger oak cask. Tyrell’s describe the 4 Acres as one of the most distinctive Shiraz wines in Australia, an evocative illustration of the singularity of Hunter Valley Shiraz. Bright, lifted, and energetic, red fruit and spice perfume the wine. A true Hunter Valley ‘Burgundy’ style, it is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a fruit-forward wine with great length, complexity, and surprising freshness.

Perhaps the finest of Tyrell’s old, dry-grown, single vineyard offerings. A little more restrained, considerably more complex and flecked with the terra-cotta and sweet earth scents of the Hunter’s echo chamber. - Ned Goodwin MW (September 2022)

Vines planted 1879, hand-picked, wild yeast-open fermented with 15% whole bunches (the remainder destemmed), 15 months in a used 2700l French cask. Bright crimson; proclaims the great vintage with its silky red and purple fruits that immediately penetrate every corner of the palate. Like Johnno's Shiraz, it is strictly medium-bodied. 290 dozen made.

This vineyard was planted in 1879, and in 2017, it delivered a bounty of just 290 dozen bottles. The delicacy shown here is entrancing. There’s ethereal perfume, hibiscus, wild roses, red plums and subtly earthy spices. The palate has smooth tannins that are defined by an elegant yet firm, chalky texture. This has enchanting elegance and depth. Drink in a decade and cellar it for up to three!

What a distinctive and unusual wine 4 Acres is. There’s nothing else really quite like it. $75 is the Private Bin members price, which is more than fair.
It’s a wine of delicacy and finesse, characterized by its perfume and length. Raspberry, candied violet, rose buds, a touch of pepper and exotic spice – it really lights up the glass. Light bodied, quite unevolved, and so very fresh and fine, with beautiful dusty tannin, cranberry freshness, and a finish of extraordinary length and persistence, with the tannin playing out and flooding through the finish, closing with a waft of perfumed berry and subtle earthiness. It’s emphatically one of the great wines of the world. 97+ points.
