About this wine
Tyrell’s 4 Acres Shiraz, Hunter Valley
Tyrell’s 4 Acres Shiraz comes from the pioneering estate’s Sacred Sites range, heroing singular vineyards that best express the unique terroir of the Hunter and Tyrell’s incredible holdings. 4 Acres is the oldest block on the Ashmans property. A reserve wine, it is only produced in top vintages.
Fruit is handpicked and sorted, before fermentation with 15% whole bunches. It is then matured for 14 months in a two-year-old Stockinger oak cask. Tyrell’s describe the 4 Acres as one of the most distinctive Shiraz wines in Australia, an evocative illustration of the singularity of Hunter Valley Shiraz. Bright, lifted, and energetic, red fruit and spice perfume the wine. A true Hunter Valley ‘Burgundy’ style, it is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a fruit-forward wine with great length, complexity, and surprising freshness.

This shows plenty of bright, floral aromas. Dried roses and crushed ripe strawberries. Spices and hints of green stems. Full-bodied, very tight and layered with fantastic, polished tannins that grow in the mouth. A dense and plush young wine with energy and wonderful length. These vineyards were planted in 1879. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

I went through all the Private Bin release reds with Chris Tyrrell yesterday, it being the 14th year running this time, and was also lucky enough to be presented with a set of 4 Acres from 2006 to 2018, with only the inaugural 2004 missing. More on that later. These wines only very recently bottled.
White flower, liquorice, spice, boysenberry, raspberry – freshness and fragrance, but with depth and a subtle earthiness. Medium-bodied, bursts with earthy purple fruit, energising to drink, driving long and spicy through the finish. Acidity underlines the wine very clearly this vintage, though the tannin is smooth and massed, laying quiet and authoritative. A sprinkle of dried herb in the aftertaste. Great. More class from this terrific vineyard.

Planted in 1879 on the right-hand side of the driveway leading to the winery, on a precious patch of volcanic soil. Hand-picked, vineyard-sorted, wild yeast-open fermented, matured in a single 4yo French 2500l cask for 15 months. This is the heart of the Ashman's Vineyard. This is quintessential, medium-bodied Hunter Valley shiraz from an exceptional vintage, framed by the freshness of the alcohol, in turn presenting gently earthy red and purple fruits and the gentle throb of acidity.
