Campbell Mattinson
The Messenger vineyard is at the southern end of the Coonawarra strip. It was planted in 1975, and is a dry grown vineyard on own roots. This is the fourth release, following the 2005, 2010 and 2015 vintage releases.
It’s a long, elegant, sinewy wine but there’s some punch to the fruit, and it’s the latter that is the clincher. It’s also perfumed and inviting, and when you combine all those features – aroma, flavour, length and style, it’s clear that the wine is a bit special. The cellar most definitely beckons. It tastes of boysenberry and green olives, cloves and bright redcurrant, toasted cedarwood, musk and chalk. It’s juicy but it also feels long and dry. Acidity is noticeably well integrated too, especially within the context of its elegant style.
94+ points.

Huon Hooke
Very deep, dark, brooding purple-red colour with a similarly brooding bouquet of blackberry, licorice, soy sauce, coffee grounds and creme de cassis, without any of the greener herbal elements of cabernet. The palate is intense and concentrated and backs up with taut, firm tannins which are nevertheless well measured and balanced. A very concentrated, plush, almost essency cabernet with a terrifically long carry, which will reward long-term cellaring. 27 MAR 2024

One of the picks of the 2021 vintage releases, Messenger comes from The Messenger vineyard located at the southern end of Coonawarra’s famous terra rossa strip. Each year, Wynns winemakers choose a premium parcel of fruit from a single vineyard to release separately. The Messenger vineyard got the nod in 2005, 2010, 2015 and in 2021 which shows it particularly likes the warmer seasons. This wine has real presence, not to mention, class. Opens with a Coonawarra calling card of scents, black cherry, black plum, violet florals, bay leaf, briar and Aussie bush. Tannins are well managed on a palate built to showcase some extraordinary fruit. The Wynns team has worked hard refining oak in recent years and you can see, actually, taste, the results of their labour. While oak is an understated presence it provides a sense of authority and enduring age-ability for the Cabernet.

15 months in new and seasoned French oak hogsheads (16% new). A basket of collected blackberries and thistle. Fresh prune plums and bilberry. Allspice, clove and black peppercorn. Turned earth, granite and coal. Morello mushroom and undergrowth. There is juniper and wisps of lavender. Pinpoint acidity and laser focus to this cabernet. It drives seamlessly across the palate and pulls at the heartstrings. A stunning drink now and in 15 to 20 years.
