Selling FAQs

Selling

Valuations - what’s your bottle worth?

We base our estimates on current auction market conditions. We reference our knowledge and database of sales to come up with the most accurate prices for your wines. It's our objective to get you, the vendor, the best price. However, not all wines have market value - if you see the term 'LI' or 'LOW INTEREST', it means your wine is unlikely to sell. The prices we achieve for vendors should not be compared to retail prices. All wines at auction are considered pre-owned and thus not the same as buying new from a shop.

Reserves and protecting your treasures

Unless otherwise requested, your reserves will be set at the 'HOUSE RESERVE', a number marginally lower than the low estimate provided in your valuation. You can adjust your reserves to meet the LOW RESERVE if you wish, but this may lessen bidding interest.

Curation and how your wines are listed

Our auction team knows how to sell your wines. Please let us take care of how many bottles of each of your wines go in each lot. Whether it be as single bottle lots, 2 bottles, 3 bottles, or more, the way we curate your saleable items is based on decades of experience.

Selling commissions - our fees

We charge 15% (including GST) on the hammer price of your wine, with a minimum charge of $6 per bottle. Where the 15% commission on a given item is less than $6, the minimum charge of $6 applies. In all other transactions, the ordinary 15% commission applies. This figure covers handling, photography, storage and, in some cases, shipping. This is automatically calculated on your vendor invoice.

Payment

Sellers are remitted into their nominated bank account within a maximum of 7 business days from close of Auction. Account details can be set/adjusted in the My Settings area of your customer account.

Unsold items

If your wine doesn't sell we will continue to take it to auction for 5 auctions. In that time you have the chance to lower your reserves within your account. Expert advice: lowering your reserve by just 10% will see an increase in bidding. If by the close of the 5th auction there is no movement, your wine will be returned to you and the shipping for said wine will be covered by you, the vendor. If you have items which have been determined to hold No Commercial Value (NCV), we will send an email advising you of the options. Items will be held for 28 days from this notification. If we don't receive a reply for return within this period we will dispose of your items.

Unreserved auctions

A popular way to auction your bottle(s) is through our regular unreserved auctions. Having your bottles listed without reserves can help generate a higher interest amongst our bidders and usually achieves prices that are similar if not better than current secondary market estimates. The competition and organic bidding in an unreserved auction helps to generate quick upward momentum, compared to a slower pace in a regular auction. They can be a quick way for vendors to sell stock that is slower-moving or unfortunately not gaining enough interest in our regular auctions.

If you are interested in participating in one of our unreserved auctions please contact our auction team on auctions@langtons.com.au. Please note that being an unreserved auction, there is a possibility for your bottle(s) to sell below expectations.

Your account - an important tool

Your account is a self-service tool, giving you the power to complete many helpful functions yourself. Within your account you can:

  • Input your own information - payment details, address, phone number etc...
  • Review your wines and the auctions they have been placed in
  • View and alter the reserves that are placed on each bottle and lot
  • See customer bidding and what wines have sold or been passed in
  • View and download invoices

It's important that you fill out as much of your account as possible, including your address and bank details, so that we can collect your wines and pay you on time.

Privacy

We collect your personal information to promote our products and services, and to deal with your requests or queries. Information you provide may be shared with organisations that provide services on our behalf such as mailing houses or delivery companies. If we need to send information overseas, we do so with your consent and take measures to protect your personal information.

You can read more on our Privacy Policy , including how to access and correct your information, and to lodge complaints about privacy.

Let us know what are you sending

Please email us a comprehensive list of what wines you're shipping to us including name, number of bottles/cartons and what’s in each carton. It's important we know what to expect upon delivery. If we don’t receive this your wines will not be covered if lost or damaged.

Take care when packing your wines for sale

When packing your wines ensure that they are packed safely and securely. All wines must be packed in quality/sound cardboard boxes WITH dividers and any additional materials deemed necessary to protect your assets. For very high value wines please don't risk it. Bubble wrap (ensuring screw caps are covered) and extra packing material will be necessary. If our team deem the packing to be below par we will not cover breakages.

You're covered for breakages and loss

On the rare occasion something happens to your wine in transit to our facility with our carrier, we will cover breakages and loss to the low estimate (less commission) of the wine in question. However, if your wine begins to leak (and leaks onto other bottles), labels or caps are damaged or the cork falls in or out of the bottle the wine is not covered. We do not cover your wine if you do not send us a list of your wine BEFORE you send them.

Condition

Our talented, wine-loving warehouse team has the final say on whether wines make it to auction. If ullages are low, corks are leaking or labels are too damaged, they can pull them from auction. You will then be alerted that your wines did not make the cut for auction on this occasion. If you don't have your wines returned to you within 10 business days we will destroy the bottles.
