Top Six Wine For Winter

Winter is when we dig deep into the cellar in search of inspiration. Whether you're entertaining or staying in; pairing with food or sitting near a fire in your high-country hideaway, don’t settle for anything less than opulent. We’re delighted to present you our winter wine picks: big reds, sophisticated Italians, classic French, a no-shame Chardonnay and more.

1. Good Claret

There is something to be said for traditions and, of course, at Tanners we believe enjoying Claret at Christmas should be one of them! Explore red Bordeaux through its sub-regions, with a tasting note for each wine included to help you decide where to start first.

2. Tuscan Dreaming

While there is hardly a day that goes by where we’re not dreaming of exploring Tuscany, in winter the longing increases. One of the great pleasures is discovering new Brunellos. Red fruited and darkly spiced, this aristocratic rendering of Sangiovese originated with the Biondi-Santi family in 1865 and for 80 years they were the only ones who made Brunello di Montalcino. Thankfully, there are many more producers to discover today.

3. Go Big in Coonawarra

What’s better than Coonawarra Cabernet? More Coonawarra Cabernet, of course. Whether you’re hosting a big winter party or a long cold-weather lunch, go big with some magnums. Our neat little selection includes large formats that are all classics, all Classified, and each is wearing some bottle age to show them at their best.

4. Chardonnay Your Way

Winter is a time for indulgence, worry about your beach body later. Right now, treat your senses to an okay and buttery Chardonnay from California’s Central Coast. Monterey, specifically, this wine comes from a family-owned and operated winery and is bursting with old school cool and rich, meringue pie flavours. This is not for sharing.

5. Liquid Gold

The artisanal cheese scene in Australia has never been better. And this year, the cold weather and green grass makes for happiest cows (and sheep) and therefore the best cheese. Rich and creamy, triple bries and piquant blues paired with the liquid gold of Sauternes is one of the reasons to hope winter holds on just a little longer.

6. Fortify Your Spirits

The Douro has been producing wines of staggering richness and complexity for centuries. These deep, unctuous wines from the most modest of price to the rare and prestigious Single Quinta bottlings, never fail to make an impact. The echoes in the wines are of a sunbaked, old world landscape, winter warming wines on the palate and in the imagination.
