A dichotomous play on intrigues: Barossan sweetness and a regional warmth of alcohol are offset against an ethereal palate of salubriously polished tannins, a dark sheen of fruit and impeccably melded oak. The wine's poise is virtuosic to the extent that the overall impression is a mid-weighted wine. Some smoked meat, tapenade, hoisin and pepper spice provide an echo and clear definition of the variety at hand, while the flavours thrust long and forcefully.

Deepish red colour with a good tint of purple, the bouquet highly appealing, with an aromatic spice note that persists. The palate has rich, ripe, sweet fruit and the overall impression is of a delicious wine, properly ripe and beautifully handled. A superb wine; a classy modern Barossa shiraz.

Thick with blackberry fruit aromas and flavors. Tarry and darkly spiced. Really brooding. Tannins are cast in dense yet smooth form. The depth of flavor here is stunning, as is the balance. Drink now for a decade or more. Screw cap.

Fresh blackberry and boysenberry, spice, liquorice, tar and dried herbs. Medium bodied, juicy bramble fruits, crisp boysenberry acidity, salted beef, firm but fine grained drying tannin, and a long fresh meaty herb infused finish. Has a bit of X-Factor, but needs time to settle into its stride.

Head Wines
Alex Head is part of the new generation of small Barossa winemakers creating wines in a new, more elegant style. Inspired by the wines of the Rhone valley, Alex Head sources small-parcels of old vine fruit and uses traditional vinification techniques to produce wines with perfume, vibrant fruit and savoury complexity. Head’s aim is maximum drinkability, which he successfully achieves by emphasising freshness, balance, texture and fruit purity. Eight wines are made under the Head label, including the Blonde and the Brunette inspired by the legendary wines of the Northern Rhone.
