The name, like the wine, is a mouthful. Giant Steps Harry's Monster Sexton Vineyard Cabernets Yarra Valley 2020 (RRP $65) has hit the mark in every vintage for a number of years. We could talk about balance, length, intensity and complexity—it is all there—but we wouldn't want to miss the point of this wine. Fine? Yes. Pretentious? No. Harry's Monster is, first and foremost, a delicious and moreish wine. A firm favourite amongst the LANGTONS team, this is a crowd-pleasing wine for those who (like us) are wine-obsessed as well as those who enjoy a good glass. Harry's Monster drinks beautifully on arrival and will age well in the cellar.
The upgrade wine comes from Yalumba, one of the Australian First Families of Wine. Yalumba The Octavius Old Vine Barossa Shiraz 2017 (RRP $160) is made from a selection of parcels from across the Barossa region raised in small French and American oak. This wine has evolved from the bulk and brawn of the 1990s to a more refined and precise wine without sacrificing its presence. Dark fruit and spice, measured oak, and good acidity too. There is plenty of development left in this wine even after five years in bottle.
