About this wine
ARTADI La Poza De Ballesteros, Rioja
Artadi are one of the premier wineries not only in Rioja, but all of Spain. Their La Poza de Ballesteros vineyard produces what Artadi describe as a "thick stroke" wine. The volume, presence and intensity implied in this description can only be the result of masterful treatment of fruit from 60+ year old vines rooted in deep clay-limestone soils. After nine months maturation in French oak, La Poza de Ballesteros begins to offer aromas and flavours of dark chocolate, tobacco and ripe black fruits. This pure tempranillo is expressive and voluptuous with a lot to offer today and plenty more over the next twenty years. Artadi was founded in 1985 and their wines hit new heights after abandoning the restrictions of ‘Rioja’ and focusing on individual vineyards and terroir expression. Their La Poza De Ballesteros is a voluminous single vineyard wine that deserves a spot in your wine cabinet and a shelf in your cellar.

Here comes another tight and powerful plot wine from Artadi with a bit of dark chocolate and warm stones to the wild herbs, slightly baked plums, mulberries and blackberries. Intense and so dense with tight, quite tough tannins. There is real potential here. Tempranillo. From organically grown grapes. Drink from 2026.

The 2019 La Poza de Ballesteros is a powerful and ripe wine with 14.66% alcohol and ripe fruit, volume and round and dense tannins. It's from a 1.18-hectare plot of vines planted in 1960 on deep brown soils, and the exposition to the afternoon sun and the deeper soils give the grapes more ripeness—and this wine is always a riper expression of Tempranillo. It has notes of black fruit and tobacco, and it's round and generous, more voluptuous, with round tannins and instant gratification. It's expressive and direct, quite gentle. 4,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2021.

Artadi
Artadi is a modern Spanish producer with vineyards in Rioja, Navarra and Alicante. Founded in 1985, the original winery was once a co-operative of 13 growers who owned precious vineyard parcels around the town of Laguardia in Rioja’s Alavesa. Visionary winemaker and businessman Juan Carlos Lopez de Lacalle realised the potential of these vineyards and purchased the Bodega, setting out to produce contemporary world-class wines. The vineyards are planted predominantly to Tempranillo and are now farmed along organic and biodynamic lines, with an emphasis on individual vineyard and terroir expression. Artadi’s philosophy of meticulous attention to detail from the vineyard to the winery is seen in the purity and expression of the wines. Contrary to local tradition, only French oak is used for maturation. In the 1990’s, Artadi expanded into Navarra and Alicante producing superb examples of Garnacha and Monastrell.
