About this wine
ARTADI Vina El Pison, Rioja
The 2 hectare Viña El Pisón vineyard was planted in 1945 on a gentle sloping site in the shape of an amphitheatre with deep sub-soils. This wine, a frequent recipient of perfection-pushing reviews, is made entirely from Tempranillo. El Pisón is a very rich and intense age-worthy style typically showing great purity of fruit and abundant chalky tannins that benefit from additional cellaring.

Josh Raynolds
Glass-staining purple. Darker fruits on the nose than the Pagos Viejos, offering a heady bouquet of blackberry, mulberry, smoky bacon, anise and mocha. Explodes on the palate, showing sweet, concentrated cherry and dark berry flavors and exotic Asian spice and candied floral qualities. The tannins are completely absorbed by the fruit, which is enlivened by slow-mounting minerals. Finishes on an expansive dark fruit liqueur note, with excellent clarity and persistence. I couldn't get this off my palate, not that I tried very hard.

100% Tempranillo. Elegant restraint on the nose. Cedary, fresh red and black fruits with delicate notes of toast and spice. Fine, dry and mouthwateringly fresh and refreshing. A gracious wine.

Artadi
Artadi is a modern Spanish producer with vineyards in Rioja, Navarra and Alicante. Founded in 1985, the original winery was once a co-operative of 13 growers who owned precious vineyard parcels around the town of Laguardia in Rioja’s Alavesa. Visionary winemaker and businessman Juan Carlos Lopez de Lacalle realised the potential of these vineyards and purchased the Bodega, setting out to produce contemporary world-class wines. The vineyards are planted predominantly to Tempranillo and are now farmed along organic and biodynamic lines, with an emphasis on individual vineyard and terroir expression. Artadi’s philosophy of meticulous attention to detail from the vineyard to the winery is seen in the purity and expression of the wines. Contrary to local tradition, only French oak is used for maturation. In the 1990’s, Artadi expanded into Navarra and Alicante producing superb examples of Garnacha and Monastrell.
