About this wine
ARTADI Vinas de Gain Blanco , La Rioja DOCa
Although Artadi’s reputation is built on the back of its reds, they also make a white with the same meticulous care and attention. Viñas de Gain Blanco is made from Viura grapes (Macabeo) grown at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria mountains at an altitude between 450 and 700 metres. The result is a clean, bright wine that boasts the delicacy, subtlety and minerality that both the variety and terroir is famous for. It’s an energetic, food-friendly white that cellars magnificently.

James Suckling
Intense with some lemon peels, tropical fruit, fine nuts and mineral on the nose followed by a taut, textured palate accentuated by its lovely dryness and mineral purity. Viura. From organically grown grapes.

The white 2018 Viñas de Gaín Blanco comes from a number of vineyards in Laguardia and Elvillar at 450 to 700 meters in altitude on clay and limestone soils. In this rainy and cooler year, it fermented with some skins and then matured for two years and four months in stainless steel (plus a handful of barrels) and finished with 13% alcohol and a pH of 3.33. It has a strong and acute note of fennel and aniseed, white flowers and musk, with a lively palate from the cool vintage; it's balanced and has purity, without very showy aromas—a white for food. 12,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2020. In 2020 and 2021, there will be a little less white wine, as they have added some white grapes to the reds.

Artadi
Artadi is a modern Spanish producer with vineyards in Rioja, Navarra and Alicante. Founded in 1985, the original winery was once a co-operative of 13 growers who owned precious vineyard parcels around the town of Laguardia in Rioja’s Alavesa. Visionary winemaker and businessman Juan Carlos Lopez de Lacalle realised the potential of these vineyards and purchased the Bodega, setting out to produce contemporary world-class wines. The vineyards are planted predominantly to Tempranillo and are now farmed along organic and biodynamic lines, with an emphasis on individual vineyard and terroir expression. Artadi’s philosophy of meticulous attention to detail from the vineyard to the winery is seen in the purity and expression of the wines. Contrary to local tradition, only French oak is used for maturation. In the 1990’s, Artadi expanded into Navarra and Alicante producing superb examples of Garnacha and Monastrell.
