About this wine
Château Certan de May Pomerol
Brilliantly situated in Pomerol between Vieux Château Certan and Château Petrus and opposite Le Pin, Certan de May's relatively small 4.95ha is planted to 65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon that have an average age of 45 years. A superstar of the appellation since the Barreau family took over production in the mid-1970s (having owned the property since 1925) both the varietal mix and combination of clay and gravel produces a wine that has superb depth and concentration.

Lots of violets and flowers with hints of smoke and spice. Then dried flowers. Full and broad with tannins that flow across the palate. Chiselled. The real deal here for Pomerol. 65% merlot, 25% cabernet franc and 10% cabernet sauvignon. Give this four to five years.

A blend of 65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2020 Certan de May is deep garnet-purple in color. It leaps with notes of wild blueberries, Morello cherries, and raspberry coulis, followed by hints of roses, damp soil, and tar. The medium to full-bodied palate is refreshing and vibrant, with plush tannins and a perfumed finish. Very pretty!

Offering up aromas of sweet berries and plums mingled with notions of aniseed, licorice and mint, the 2020 Certan de May is medium to full-bodied, broad and layered, with a rich and enveloping core of ripe, somewhat baked fruit. This is a solid effort, but it can't quite match the 2019.

A classic, complex, old-school beauty that will be loved by the traditionalists out there, the 2020 Château Certan De May offers up a flowery, savory bouquet of red and black fruits, saddle leather, savory herbs, and incense. With medium-bodied richness, a good core of sweet fruit, fine tannins, and a great finish, give bottles just a few years and enjoy over the coming 10-15.

The 2020 Certan de May has come together nicely. It remains a powerful, perhaps even monolithic, Pomerol, and yet it offers very good balance. A blast of black cherry, gravel, dried herbs, licorice and incense announces this decidedly brooding Pomerol. There's certainly plenty of depth and big tannins to match. The substantial finish is impressive. I would give this a few years in bottle to see what happens. The 2020 is a bruiser, that much is pretty evident.
