About this wine
Château Lafite-Rothschild, 1er Cru Classé, Pauillac
Château Lafite-Rothschild is one of the most renowned properties in the Médoc. Owned by Baron Eric de Rothschild and located in the north of the Pauillac appellation, Lafite Rothschild is also one of the largest Médoc estates. It has 95 hectares of vineyards planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), Merlot (20%) and Cabernet Franc (10%). Lafite Rothschild's vineyards lie on deep gravel beds (up to 5 metres thick) over marl and limestone. Annual production tops 35,000 cases, although a third of this consists of the second wine called Carruades de Lafite.
Of all the Médoc Grand Crus, Lafite Rothschild can be the most beguiling and difficult to understand. It is never the most powerful, yet, along with Margaux, possesses the most exquisite bouquet of any Médoc wine. It has the elegance, balance and harmony that epitomises claret at its very best.

LANGTONS
The key to great Lafite is balance, poise and restraint; it is a more succinct wine than its bold and boisterous contemporaries. Some may argue that the drinking plateau of Lafite is shorter than that of other Pauillacs and certainly in the past that was true. Predicting the drinking plateau can be difficult since its varietal profile varies so much (less so in recent years.)
The vineyard features three major areas: the hillsides around the Château, the adjacent Carruades plateau to the west, and 4.5 hectares in neighboring Saint Estèphe. Area: 178 hectares, including 103 hectares of vineyards. Soils with deep fine gravel mixed with aeolien sands on a bedrock of tertiary limestone. They are well drained and well exposed to the sun. Grape varietals : Cabernet Sauvignon (71%), Merlot (25%), Cabernet Franc (3%) and Petit Verdot (1%) Average age of the vineyard: The average age of the grapevines is 30 years old, over all. But it must be noted that vines younger than 10 years old (representing 20 hectares) are not used in the Grand Vin. This means that the average age of the vines used in the Grand Vin (Château Lafite Rothschild itself) average 40 years. It is also noteworthy that 18 hectares of vineyards are more than 50 years old. The oldest plot, called “La Gravière”, is 115 years old, since it was planted in 1886. Two other plots are also more than 80 years old.

The bouquet is forward and aromatic, with smoky, ripe black and red fruits on the nose and a fresh and firm texture, with plenty of structure and a lingering finish. It will not be the longest-lived wine, but it will drink well as you wait for your bottles from 2005, 2009, and 2010 to mature. The 2007 vintage began with a warm, mild spring. The growing season was overcast and only moderately warm. Picking began with the Merlot in the third week of September. The final blend is 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot. For a vintage with a second-tier reputation at best, this delivers now.

Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits' 10-Years-On tasting, the 2007 Lafite-Rothschild has an elegant cigar box bouquet, with dusky black fruit and a touch of antique bureau—just classic Lafite. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, cedar and tobacco infusing the black fruit, classic in style with a conservative yet focused finish that lingers in the mouth. This is certainly the most subtle First Growth, but one of the most refined too—a sophisticated but understated Lafite-Rothschild that will age with discrete style. Tasted February 2017.

A candidate for the wine of the vintage, the 2007 Lafite Rothschild (84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot) reveals classic Lafite aromas of graphite, unsmoked cigar tobacco, black currants, cherries, and a hint of truffles. The complex aromatics are followed by a round, medium to full-bodied wine with silky tannins, an overall subtle smoky component, and a rich, round, generous, plump finish. Already evolved and delicious, it should continue to drink well for two decades.
