About this wine
CHATEAU LANESSAN Cru bourgeois, Haut-Medoc
With a history stretching back to 1310 Chateau Lanessan is one of the oldest estates in Bordeaux. Today the eighth generation of the Bouteiller family are custodians of this historic estate, which includes 85 hectares of vines. Bordering several of the most prestigious vineyards in Saint-Julien, Chateau Lanessan blends Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot grown in Garonne gravel soils. In the year 2000 the Bouteiller family undertook a significant program of investment in the vineyards in the winery, including the appointment of renowned oenologist Eric Boissennot, which has seen quality levels rise and rise in the ensuing decades.
The average age of the vines at Chateau Lanessan is 30 years, with the fruit mechanically harvested at optimal ripeness. The grapes are then sorted with optical screening equipment before undertaking fermentation in temperature-controlled concrete tanks. Each year the wines are handled sensitively according to the needs of the vintage and the fruit. As a result classic winemaking techniques, such as pumping over, rack and return are used but vary from vintage to vintage. Judicious use of oak ensures the wines are elegant but multilayered with juicy tannins and a long finish.
