About this wine
CLARENDON HILLS Clarendon Onkaparinga Grenache, McLaren Vale
The Clarendon Hills Onkaparinga Grenache hails from a bush vine, single-vineyard with nearly 80-year-old vines. Located in the upper reaches of Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale, the site is extremely low yielding, highly concentrated and capable of yielding approximately 500 cases worldwide. The quality standard is unmistakably blue-chip and considered a Grand Cru vineyard by Clarendon Hills. It is made only in the best years, crafting richly layered, balanced and deeply flavoured single vineyard expressions.

Expert Review
Gary Walsh
Exotic perfume of dried roses, musk and spice, raspberry and blueberry. It’s medium to full-bodied, superb stony tannin bedded through supple and fragrant mixed berries, blood orange tang, and a nutty and ‘mineral’ finish of outstanding length. Texture, intensity, and its distinct character mark it out as a special wine.

Here, the signature of power is met by a bridle of impeccably hewn tannins, oak and grape. The flavours, despite their force, latent and reticent. This needs a bit of time, but is the most elegant iteration of the suite. Dark cherry, clove, anise, mint, leather polish, tamarind and a souk of herb and spice drifting across the senses. The sole caveat, the hot finish.
