Mike Bennie
Supple texture with a trill of game meat, dried herb, smoky spice, earth and slate. Feels savoury from the get go, though you’ll get dark cherry, currants, sour plum and dark choc-liqourice too. Slips along the palate nicely and then finds a firming rub of gruff but appealing, sandy tannin. There’s a lift and lightness in the mix too. Sandy, freshly saw woody oak nuances perhaps a little prominent now, but the savoury nature of the wine delivers goods.

Bright, medium-deep red-purple colour with a distinctly peppery cool-climate nose. Floral/aromatic, with mixed spices and a lot of charm. It’s medium bodied at the most, with fine texture and delicate tannins that melt away quickly. A very accessible, light to medium weight red that is very much a pinot drinker's shiraz.

The 2022 O’Riada Shiraz is made from fruit picked from the Clonakilla estate and other vineyards in Murrumbateman and Hall. The 2022 season was cool and long, like its predecessor, 2021. On the nose, there are notes of pink musk sticks and rose petals, blood, black cherry, pastrami and iodine. In the mouth, the wine is everything that the nose has promised—vibrant, alive, delicious, exciting and shaped by very fine pumice stone tannins. Gentle dust and brush sway through the finish. What a lovely wine. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Clonakilla
The story of Clonakilla is one of risk and ingenuity, of vision, generosity and faith. Founded in 1971, Clonakilla grew from a small, struggling boutique winery in the marginal wine region of Murrumbateman to become an icon of ultra-fine Australian wine. Under the skilled winemaking of Chief Winemaker Tim Kirk, Clonakilla’s remarkable flagship wine, the Langton’s Classified ‘Exceptional’ Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier has risen to become a definitive example of its genre. Clonakilla also produces a number of superb whites including Riesling, Chardonnay and Viognier alongside its range of superbly crafted cool climate reds.
