About this wine
COL D'ORCIA Brunello di Montalcino COLLECTION CASE 90/99/04/05/06/07
Exclusive to Langton’s, we’ve secured six museum vintages, each exceptional, directly from the cellars of Col D’Orcia: 1990, 1999, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007. These wines are extremely limited, which is why there’s only 36 beautifully presented original wooden flat packs (containing one bottle of each vintage) available. The legendary 1990 is nudging middle age with plenty left in the tank, while the 1999 and 2005 are each warmer years, with ample dark fruit allusions and strutting tannins. Conversely, the 2004 is an exercise of detailed classicism and restraint, a brilliant wine in the making with a long future. 2006 and 2007, too, rare vintages pre-climate change when ample winter rain promoted attenuated ripening during the typically torrid Tuscan summer. Long-limbed tannins serving to compress redder fruit accents, the result.

The 1990 Brunello di Montalcino impresses for its overall harmony. Everything is simply in the right place. The aromas, flavours, and tannin have all matures evenly in this radiant, supple Brunello. Even at 21 years of Age the 1990 remains a youngster, maybe with as much as another 20 years to go. Huge tannins frame the mouth-watering finish as the sheer vibrancy of Sangiovese saturates the palate with intense acidity. This is a great showing. Of course there is always an element of variation, especially among older wines, but I find it interesting that the straight 1990 Brunello appears to be ageing more gracefully than the Riserva.

Another dry, hot vintage, 1999 was rated five stars by the Brunello di Montalcino consortium. Marone Cinzano notes that his 1999 has always stood out for its immense concentration and tannic charge and has only recently come around. Expressive scents of anise and pressed violets make for an inviting entry. Grippy tannins assert their power on the palate, eventually yielding to a core of dark berries and sous-bois. Dense and full though properly proportioned, this has plenty of appeal now along with the substance and structure for at least another 10 years.

Col d'Orcia's flagship Brunello is made in a traditional style in the best sense, offering versatile, clear-fruited Sangiovese with the structure and brightness of fruit to give long drinking windows and good value. A tidy, bright, juicy Brunello with no sense of over-ripeness.

Ripe fruit, with dried cherries and flowers. Full and soft, with velvety tannins and a fruity finish. Really delicious now.

The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino emerges from the glass with a finely knit bouquet of tobacco, sweet herbs, licorice, leather and red cherries. The wine shows lovely depth, richness and polish in its engaging personality. The warm radiance of the fruit flows through effortlessly to the long, creamy finish. This is a terrific effort from Col d’Orcia.

Here is a particularly impressive wine from one of Montalcino's top estates. The wine opens with ethereal balsam notes of eucalyptus, humus, dried fruit and dried mint. Beyond those elegant tones are sturdier layers of cured meat and savory spice. It shows bold concentration, thick power and firmness on the close, with a drying mineral finish. Let it age five more years.
