Cocoa, red capsicum, perfume and baking spices, blackcurrant and boysenberries. Medium-bodied, fine silty tannin, the more time you spend with it the-better-it-gets sort of wine. A graphite feel, unforced, with raspberry and cocoa, crisp red berry acidity, and an earthy yet succulent finish of perfume and impeccable length. A ‘mineral’ feel, and kind of understated, yet powerful, with lavish stony tannin to close. Very fine, lacy wine of delicacy and finesse. It needs time in the cellar, I think, to show its best.

All new oak after being fermented in tank for ten days. Supple, soft, juicy red, dark, inky, mulberry fruit character, blackcurrant pastille, licks of mint and dark chocolate, saline minerally notes, graphite tannins pulling things into focus and bringing the wine to impressive length. Youthful, almost unresolved in full, a wine of immense pleasure and tension on its way. A compelling wine, distinct, so pure, so luminous.

This is as pure an expression of cabernet as you could imagine. It spent six months in new French barriques and there was no fining, yeast additions, or acid additions. Compelling and engaging on the nose with a bright violet and red fruit aroma plus a little of that vineyard ironstone character. The palate is plush with such a powerful, yet refined fruit expression supported by fine chalky tannins and neatly layered oak. There’s a slinky and silky feel that almost, but not quite, conceals the tremendous power here. I would love to be able to drink this wine when it reaches full maturity and potential but sadly that might be a bridge too far.

Hand picked under a full moon on a fruit day. The journey of Vanya is a delight to behold and of course, drink. A wine shaped by 100% cabernet and complete in every way. It’s fragrant with florals, woodsy spices, cassis, mulberries with a dusting of cocoa and warm earth. It’s medium-bodied, long and detailed with beautifully shaped tannins – fine, ripe and textural. Approachable now yet time will give this more layers and depth.

In 1966 Diana and Dr Kevin Cullen planted a trial 0.4 ha vineyard on their sheep and cattle property at Willyabrup in the Margaret River. A new vineyard was planted in 1971 with further plantings made over the subsequent decades. Winemaker and environmentalist Vanya Cullen, a strong believer in biodynamic viticulture, has harnessed the rhythms of the cosmos, earth’s energy and vitality to "achieve greater individuality of site through working with nature rather than against it". Meticulous attention to vineyard management results in fruit of exceptional intensity, concentration, tannin ripeness and acid balance. The “quest for quality, integrity and sustainability” is also reflected in the carbon neutral and naturally powered winery where sound winemaking techniques and skills are married with empathy for vineyard character.
