ABOUT THE WINERY
Curly Flat
Langton’s Selections Curly Flat Pinot Noir, Curly Flat Chardonnay Phillip and Jill Moraghan’s Curly Flat – named after an iconic Australian cartoon philosopher – is located in the Macedon Region of Victoria. It was first established in 1991 on well drained volcanic soils. The winery has become a favourite among wine scribes and sommeliers. Phillip Moraghan, an ex stockbroker, is renowned for his generosity and enthusiasm. He learned his winemaking craft by vintage immersion and the support of the late Laurie Williams, a local pioneering winemaker of Flynn & Williams. The gentle sloping vineyard is planted to various clones of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The vines are all trellised on a Lyre or Geneva Double Curtain structure to maximize exposure to sunlight, reduce disease pressure and achieve optimum ripeness. The gravity designed winery is designed for minimal handling. The wines are made in the traditional Burgundian fashion. The whole-bunch pressed Chardonnay is batch vinified in both French oak and stainless steel using wild yeasts. Moraghan racks off a proportion of wine from stainless steel to complete fermentation in oak. This tri-fermenting philosophy method allows more blending options at assemblage. The Curly Flat Chardonnays are excellent with plenty of pure pear skin/lemon curd aromas and leesy/grilled nut nuances. The wines are very fresh and appealing when young with good volume and minerality but they only have moderate cellaring potential. The Pinot Noir is a work in progress. Gary Farr, one of Victoria’s most experienced Pinot Noir makers, has provided consultancy advice over the years. Curly Flat Pinot Noir is an exemplary style with classical red cherry/strawberry/meaty aromas, well concentrated generous flavours and slinky fine tannins. In some years it has whiffs of mint/eucalypt. The wines regularly sell out which pretty well tells the story. A secondary label called Williams Crossing helps with cash flow and has its own active following. Andrew Caillard MW, Langton's
