About this wine
Giodo Brunello di Montalcino DOCG
The Brunello is a wine of immense presence. It commands you from the first sniff; both grape material and vintage show their full class. This wine spends around 30 months in large casks (500-700 litre) followed by additional time in concrete before resting in bottle for a further 18 months.

James Suckling
Aromas of cedar, earth, tree bark, fruit tea, black tea and cherries. Then it turns to fresh and dried flowers. Medium to full body as it grows on the palate with superb fine tannins that run the length of the wine. It’s structured and powerful with great length. The acid, tannin balance is incredible. Very clear and transparent. What a wine. Drinkable but better in three or four years.

When I tasted this wine with its maker, the celebrated enologist Carlo Ferrini, he told me that he put every last drop of love into the 2019 vintage. He believes it is the best wine he has made thus far at his relatively new Giodo project that started in 2009. Indeed, I would rank the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino as high as or even better than the best vintages made at this boutique estate. In my mind, they are 2010, 2016 and now 2019. This wine comes from a three-hectare plot with 19-year-old vines that are cared for obsessively. This amphitheater-shaped parcel called La Poderina is nestled deep within the forest on a steep slope that overlooks Monte Amiata in the distance. The soils are white in color with lots of rocks. This is a wine of depth and dimension, with vibrant energy, elegant balsamic notes and sweetly ripened fruit. The medium fruit weight is balanced against the wine's acidity and fine tannins. It ends with floral notes of violet and iris.

Master winemaker, and pioneer of the Super-Tuscan movement, Carlo Ferrini pours heart and soul into his brilliant, brooding Giodo wines. New to Langton’s, these are essential additions for any pilgrim to the altar of Brunello. Here, Langton’s Head of International Buying Jesper Kjaersgaard explains just what makes the wines of Giodo such a find.
Carlo Ferrini is a name all lovers of Italian wine need to know, and not just because he now has a 100-point wine (courtesy of James Suckling). He’s one of the most revered names in Tuscany and it is because of the reputation he’s forged over many years.
In fact, he first came to prominence as the Technical Director of the Chianti Classico Consorzio, a status built on when he became the consultant to some of the most highly regarded wineries in Tuscany. He was in fact one of the key drivers behind the Super-Tuscan movement. He’s won several high-level winemaking awards and is commonly described as a ‘master’.
Most importantly here though, in 2000 Ferrini had the opportunity to purchase a pristine piece of land at the southern end of Montalcino. It’s called Giodo, a name derived from his parents ‘Gio’vanna and ‘Do’natello. Giodo is his ‘passion project’. Since 2000 he has accumulated 5.5ha of planted vineyards, 2.5ha of classified Brunello and 3ha of Sangiovese destined for his IGT Toscana wine, La Quinta (his fifth vineyard). The aim of La Quinta is to showcase a different and more immediate Sangiovese character than the superbly majestic Brunello.
