About this wine
Hardy’s Eileen Hardy Shiraz, McLaren Vale
Eileen Hardy Shiraz is a very opulent perfumed wine with ripe gamey blackberry/liquorice aromas, spicy nuances and fine silky dense tannins. The original Eileen Hardy Bin 80 Shiraz was first released in 1973 to mark family matriarch Eileen Hardy's 80th birthday. After an initial switch in the mid to late 1970s to Cabernet Sauvignon blends, the wine has evolved from a multi-regional blend to an entirely McLaren Vale derived Shiraz based on half century to century-old vineyards. At completion of fermentation, the wine is drained through traditional basket presses into a combination of roughly 25-33% new and seasoned French oak for around 14 to 18 months. This "living breathing creation" reflects a strong house winemaking ethos and exceptional vineyard resources. Since 2007 the wine has been bottled under screw-cap.

Ink black core into a deeply-staining purple rim. Plums, meat, and lavender flowers explode form the glass, whilst the palate sits rich, deep and all encompassing. There's a serious intensity of fruit that is backed up with layers of meat and smoky complexity and ample fine-grained tannins to keep everything focused and carrying incredible length. An excellent wine that has both power and poise.

Big wine but beautifully turned out. Blueberry and plum flavours flood the palate, pulling vanilla, cream and clove characters along with them. Graphite and woodsmoke notes then emerge and bloom with air. I looked at this over the course of four days I reckon and it hardly budged throughout; it’s a rock solid wine, in substance and quality, though the fine-grain of the tannin here lends the profile a fair amount of finesse. This will live for a very long time.

A confluence of fruit planted in 1892 in Upper Tintara, together with McLaren Flat sourcing from the Elliot site, much of which is 57 years old. Fermented wild in open-tops before maturation in French oak (25% new) for 17 months. Powerful and heady, yet taut, spicy and introverted. White pepper and clove serve up first impressions. Blueberry, violet and a ferrous meatiness unravel with a workout in the glass. The finish is exceptionally long and detailed, if not drying and in need of time. This should come together very well.
