About this wine
Jim Barry Wines Assyrtiko Clare Valley
Jim Barry Wines Assyrtiko from Clare Valley is a captivating expression of this Greek grape variety thriving in Australia's Clare Valley. This wine displays vibrant citrus and mineral aromas with hints of saline and fresh herbs. The palate is crisp, with lively acidity and a distinctive textural quality—flavours of lemon, lime, and green apple dominate, supported by a refreshing saline character. Jim Barry's Assyrtiko is well-suited for seafood pairings, particularly with oysters or grilled fish, highlighting its versatility and unique profile. This wine showcases Clare Valley's ability to produce exciting and expressive wines beyond traditional varieties.
'I first tasted Assyrtiko in August 2006 while on holiday with my wife Sue on the Greek island of Santorini, birthplace of the Assyrtiko grape variety. The crisp, acidic qualities reminded me of our Clare Valley Rieslings and yet it was a flavour I had not experienced before. Intrigued with this newfound variety, I began the process of importing cuttings into Australia through quarantine. In August 2012 we planted Australia’s first Assyrtiko at our Lodge Hill Vineyard, a special and unique site treasured by my family and suited to this variety. Our Assyrtiko journey has been fascinating and has enabled us to produce a wine which, I believe, is a true expression of the variety. I hope you find the flavours as interesting as I did in 2006.'

Jim Barry
Jim Barry, named after the eponymous founding wine maker, is one of the stalwart wineries of the Clare Valley. In 1959 the late Jim Barry purchased land near the township of Clare, replanting much of it to vineyard. Under the leadership of managing director Peter Barry and sons Tom and Sam Barry the brand has gone from strength to strength. Jim Barry is best known for its flagship Shiraz The Armagh, but also produces an impressive range of wines including Riesling, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon from their vineyard holdings in the Clare Valley and Coonawarra.
