About this wine
Jim Barry Wines Clarevale Cabernet Malbec, Clare Valley
The Clarevale Cabernet Malbec, companion to the iconic, LANGTONS Classified, The Armagh Shiraz, is a flagship of the Barry family portfolio. This wondrous cabernet dominant blend (more than 90%) offers dark blue and black fruits, the sweetest forest floor aromas, whispers of clove, and lashings of dark chocolate and cherries. Clarevale is renowned for its complexity, poise, and elegance, and its shape and tannin profile put the fine in fine wine. In its youth, Clarevale is temptingly approachable, but make no mistake, it will evolve over decades in the cellar.
For decades, the Barry family has led the way in Clare Valley, planting and nurturing vineyards, capturing a diverse catalogue of site, soil, and aspect. Clarevale Cabernet Malbec is a loving tribute to the region, the people, and the Clarevale Co-operative, from which Jim Barry emerged as the region's first qualified winemaker. In 1964, Jim Barry planted his first vineyard to cabernet and malbec, and many early wines blended the two varieties. Two generations later, the Barry family honour Jim’s vision with a wine that delivers the ultimate expression of their cabernet and malbec vineyards.

Blackcurrant, aniseed and camphor, dried roses, tobacco, cedar. It’s medium-bodied, a whole heap of energy here, plenty of ferrous tannin, a whole lot of gummy chew and dried rose, redcurrant, raspberry, blonde tobacco savoury input, a bright orange tang to acidity lending freshness and a crisp feel, with a robust finish of superb length. Here we have it. It’s superb and feels like essence of Clare Valley. Kind of like Wendouree, albeit a little more pricey. Still, hats off. This is super cool and next level. Yes.

Clarevale enters the fray alongside Armagh as top of the tree wine for Jim Barry Wines. Poised, elegant, refined. Superlatives galore. So fragrant, so svelte, such wonderful, beautiful texture. Aromas of black cherry, cassis, clove and eucalyptus with anise and all spice chiming in. The palate similarly flavoured with ribbons of ultrafine, granite-mineral tannin, slightly ferrous, teasing the wine out to its impossibly long and fine finish. Magnificent wine.
Jim Barry
Jim Barry, named after the eponymous founding wine maker, is one of the stalwart wineries of the Clare Valley. In 1959 the late Jim Barry purchased land near the township of Clare, replanting much of it to vineyard. Under the leadership of managing director Peter Barry and sons Tom and Sam Barry the brand has gone from strength to strength. Jim Barry is best known for its flagship Shiraz The Armagh, but also produces an impressive range of wines including Riesling, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon from their vineyard holdings in the Clare Valley and Coonawarra.
