The flavours, the savouriness and the feel of this wine are all appealing. Lots of detail with nothing overt. The palate lends itself to cocoa-powder tannins, the oak is integrated and there's a depth of flavour. It comes out as a complete wine.

As well as modern, sleek fruit there is a great deal of savoury snap to this wine, with black-pepper seasoning appropriate for the variety. Semi-firm tannins and high acid complete the structure and that intense black fruit submits to lengthy floral persistence on the finish. Not as burly as many Shirazes, with a strong sense of gastronomy about it. Bound to age well. (RH)

Delicious. 2018 puts this wine in such a spectacular place. And it is a good idea to taste this before you buy the Armagh, for they are possessed of the same purity of red fruit at their cores. This 2018 The McRae Wood Shiraz is lighter in frame and not as long as the Armagh, but it offers an excellent, value-for-money, dignified cellaring option. Sensational wine here. (Or you could just drink it, because it's delicious now, too.)

Jim Barry
Jim Barry, named after the eponymous founding wine maker, is one of the stalwart wineries of the Clare Valley. In 1959 the late Jim Barry purchased land near the township of Clare, replanting much of it to vineyard. Under the leadership of managing director Peter Barry and sons Tom and Sam Barry the brand has gone from strength to strength. Jim Barry is best known for its flagship Shiraz The Armagh, but also produces an impressive range of wines including Riesling, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon from their vineyard holdings in the Clare Valley and Coonawarra.
